I was watching that one, too, Phil, but thought the price was quite reasonable considering the historical significance and rarity--apparently the only team photo of Jackie with the Monarchs ever to come onto the market. Condition wasn't great, but as the saying goes: find another one!

I won the 1945 KC Monarchs photo. AFAIK, it is the only photo of that team with both Jackie Robinson (bottom right) and Satchel Paige (top row, fourth from left) in it. It was Robinson's first year of professional baseball and his only year in the Negro Leagues. I may have overpaid, but who knows when I would have had a chance to pick up another. The periphery is rough, but I think that it will frame up nicely.

Default Monarchs Photo

Kevin: I don't think you overpaid. The combination of Paige and Robinson is iconic. Vintage Monarchs memorabilia is nearly impossible to find, even hear in KC. Great pickup!

I think you got a bargain. Another auction, another time, I could see it going for double or triple what you paid, which is relative chump change in our hobby. That money could have bought you any number of pretty common pieces in this auction and others. Look what you got instead.

Guys, thanks for all of the comments on my photo pickup. That is the beauty about collecting photos - their value is very subjective. What is worth $5K to me may be worth either $1K or $10K to a fellow collector and vice-versa. I know that I have been able to pick up photos in auction for 50% of what I was willing to pay and other photos that I really wanted have gone for 5X what I was expecting. They are a very emotional collectible and what appeals to each of us is usually very personal.

Yes, and in the case of this one in particular, considering both its incredible historical significance and apparent singularity, I don't see how it could be considered overpriced almost no matter what it went for. As I said before, it struck me as a serious bargain.
