Press Pin fakes

i have thought about collecting a few of the yankees world series pins - 1930 era to early 2000 era.

i know nothing about these pins other then i see what you mean on this post warning about the modern backs when i went to the seller you mentioned. thanks for the heads up

so... how many of these pins are faked and what else do i need to understand.

I really have no advice, but will state they are outstanding pieces of memorabilia to collect. I got the bulk of mine in an auction when Yankee Stadium was first renovated in the mid-70s. Then, in the mid-80s, press pin specialist extraordinaire, the late Jerry Sullivan, helped me get my white whale.

Backside patina is hard to decipher, particularly if the pin was polished or spruced up a bit with tooth paste, a legitimate help taught me by another press pin expert, Jim Johnston. He also taught me never to use toothpaste on the front of the pin, as the paste will scratch the fine enamal paint used on the pins. Look for natural patina aging on the front; the fakes look freshly made. Now, some of mine from the Yankee Stadium auction were un-issued leftovers that were "fresh as a daisy" pristine. None of this particularly helps, no doubt, but suffice to say they are some of the finest baseball pieces to collect.

do any other knowledgable site members have some input. here are the pins i care to understand relative to were reproductions and outright fakes created??

yankees world series pins of the following years:

2001, 2000, 1981, 1976, 1963, 1957, 1950, 1949, 1947, 1941, 1939, 1932.

i tried to narrow the list as much as possible to help focus the insights.

i see most of these fairly reguarly on ebay with massively divergent prices, which makes me really wonder regarding authenticity, any input will be appreciated.

Pins are probably a ripe area for fraud as there is just a bit less known about them than our cards. Thanks for the info...More times than not this kind of thread helps a collector and that is what it is all about. Here are a few pins from my prior collection just so we can have some eye candy...

And a short anecdotal story. A well heeled board member showed me a unique pre-war pin at a National. It was even in a PSA holder. Unfortunately PSA didn't have a clue about the paper pin back and it was an entirely different one and they thought it was legit, it wasn't. It is very easy to take the back paper out of a legit pin and put another one in, making a Frankenstein pin.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but it's the only one I can find on the subject.

Are the pins I am posting the ones that are bad? Appears a seller in Germany still has several on ebay.

Did the legit ones only have the tie/tack type button on the back?
