Also Leon, I got a kick out of the address on the postcard. Just a name with the city/town & state. I guess it got delivered though.

Woburn wasn't all that big then, just over 15000. So it was probably a second or third class post office. Those didn't start carrier delivery until 1912. Until then you had to go to the post office to pick up all mail. At times they'd advertise mail on hand in the local paper.

The even more fun addresses are the older ones, even from major cities.
Within the town or city so little was needed I've seen ones just addressed like
Sam Smith
City

And yes That's literal, made up name but the address was often just "city" *

Of course I've seen others that got a bit more detailed.
Sam Smith
anywhere,
Some county
Some state
Old state road behind Roberts store near the stone bridge.

It's big fun looking at really old mail sometimes.

Steve B

* This was called "drop mail" as it was dropped off at the post office in the same city. When a letter was 3 cents, for years a letter within the same city brought to the post office only cost 2 cents. Not all mail was delivered, some cities didn't get delivery until 1912 although the big cities had it starting in the 1860's and rural delivery began in 1896.

Miss Bond's reputation in Eastern Mass was legendary. Her mail was even delivered without postage. She was well aware that the postman always rang twice and she was always ready.

I hate posts like this because I'm always late to the party and I never know what the heck went down!

Still, glad Leon's kicking ass!

Thanks for the kind words on the forum. Ya'll keep letting me (or another mod) know when you see something funky and we'll keep this place as safe as we can with as few rules as possible.

Edited to add, JMB has verified his registration and is back on the forum.

I want to bump this thread as Joe Ba.rr, JMB, has verified his registration. I know he has some deals going on, on the BST, and that is the reason for this post and bump to the top. To be clear, as long as someone is associated with a phone number, I call, it is probably fine. To me there is at least a little security in being able to track someone down if need be..(as much as is possible on the net).

I wanted to ask you a question about your comment Frank, but then decided that it is probably better that I don't know.

Keep up the good work Leon!

If she looked at all like Lana Turner, no wonder she was legendary!

I've had a total of two alias on Network 54 over the last 20 years. First was Husband-Of-Tammy but after the divorce I thought it be best to change it.
