Overpaid for this, but since Sullivans are the only cards I collect, I have to overpay sometimes since it's not like I can just move on to another player's card

Probably overpaid a bit for these at the time. Over budget for sure as I hadn't planned on the Cobb.
Most of my better cards were probably a bit over the usual price, but considering how many were bought in the early 80's I figure I did ok. ![]() Steve B |

Awesome pick-up's, Al, I had no idea that those two were "on the market". There is at least one Baseball Hall of Fame rookie card collector that is going to be mighty jealous when he sees those.....

Jaime, great pick-up. I can't believe that Chris let it go. I was at the National with him when he got it. It was the best card for sale at the whole show.
PS- No wait, Richard Masson had a Wagner for sale. I forgot about that one. Last edited by Sean; 10-12-2016 at 01:37 PM. |

The first 2 I did pretty good on, the second 3 not so much...Rarity doesn't equal value. I have been trying to tell myself that for close to 20 yrs now...

Yeah, I remember bidding on those two, and getting blown away long before extended bidding began.

There should be a Net54 "great quotes" section with this one near the top!
I have lost some money thinking along those lines as well. Rarity means low supply, but there's that other nasty price component called "demand"! |

Pete,
For long-term comparison, my 1993 Beckett says: T207 Loudermilk: $1,000 VG-EX (raw); $2,500 EX-MT (raw) T206 Cobb Bat On: $800 VG-EX (raw); $2,000 EX-MT (raw) (Note: This is at the height of the early 1990s BB card bubble). Hypothetically, would you trade your SGC 40 Loudermilk for an SGC 40 Cobb Bat On? Scot Edited to add: Oh, I see yours is a Red Cross. Never mind. Last edited by sreader3; 10-13-2016 at 08:11 PM. |

I guess I overpaid on every item I've ever won at auction - or, at least I paid more than anyone else thought it was worth!

I watched for a long time for a Moses Yellow Horse card to show up. When one (1923 Zeenut) finally did, I paid more than I thought I would.
Not too long afterward, a second one (the one I was originally looking for - 1922 Exhibits) came up and I paid about a third of what I did for the first one. Glad to have both! 1923 ZEENUT PCL MOSES YELLOWHORSE.jpg 1922 Exhibits- Moses Yellowhorse.jpg

When I got into back collecting, I jumped into buying Hindus a little too fast and overpaid for a few. I'd probably have trouble breaking even on this one, but I love it. It's real nice for the grade, and in the last 4 years I have only seen one other come to market and it was very low grade.

One of the guys I learned a lot from about hobbies in general once told me
- You can't pay too much, but you can pay too soon. For most things that just means that you'd have to hold on to an item a while to get any profit at all. Sometimes a couple years, sometimes longer. There are few exceptions, although most commons from about 1980 till now were probably paid for generations too soon. Steve B |
