Chris, I was getting ready to wax poetic on the Gabby Street scrap, and then I scrolled down a little more. Holy hell, man, that ghost just pops off my laptop screen.
Steve, just...wow. Fantastic pick up. Is that your first red cross-back? Scooter, that's a really nice Young. The registration is perfect, and I think the colors really pop, too. Joe, congratulations on the two Gehrigs. A couple of my favorite cards from the first half of the century; the # 37, especially. That's my next pickup. Dean, those are my kind of buys. The visual appeal of both the Cobb and the Matty far outperform the technical grades. You've got a quite the discerning eye. Raymond, congrats on the Ruth. I love this board. I've spent literally 1/4 of my life reading, developing a broad vocabulary, and when I come to Net 54, all I end up saying is "wow", "amazing", and "incredible"! Sometimes the simplest words best convey a person's emotions. Great month, thus far, everybody!

That Konetchy is a bit scary. Looks like he has been attending the Vampires' Ball. Even his glove has some blood on it. That one would keep awake all night.

This is sitting on my front porch (I hope). I took a chance on it, I hope it is a type 1. What do you guys think? Is it something to get authenticated? It has a 30 day return policy, I have bought from this seller before with nothing but great transactions. Circa 1913 Chattanooga Lookouts, the photographer checks out, Wiles of Nashville, Tennessee. The Tennessee State Library has a collection of 60 items from Marvin Willard Wiles, photographer, who lived from 1883-1957, Wiles Photography Studio (Nashville Tennessee). So, what do you think?
(full disclosure, I lifted the e-bay image from the auction)

John, I agree, but I bought it because I need it for the set. It is a team variation that is more difficult to find, with SGC only grading a handful of them. I figure I can always upgrade later...Rob

This came today from the Hunt July auction that had all the Tony Gwynn items in it. This line in the auction description had me a little worried; "Additional provenance comes in the form of a copy of a letter from a noted long time Philadelphia area memorabilia dealer and collector relating that it was sourced from a member of the Plank Family." When I got it today and opened it, I was surprised by the copy of the letter. The letter head was from Delco Sport Cards, and was signed by Tony Carrafiell. Most of you old timers will know why that is a big relief as to the provenance of the piece, as most of you remember that Mr. Carrafiell was a great member of the hobby. The letter states that Mr. Carrafiell was acting on behalf of Eddie Plank's grandson, who was selling a few pieces from his grandfather's estate. That is as good an endorsement as to the provenance as I could want. This piece is really neat unto itself, it is quite big, the frame is 14.5" x 18".

Paul and Jeff,
Coming from you that is high praise. You both have amazing collections. Question about the frame, I think it is somewhat old, but not close to period. I am concerned about the glass being so close to the image. Do you think it would hurt or help the piece to have it re-framed?

Thanks Dan, I know it's "authentic" but it's a pretty card! Seems to measure up.

I also picked up some D310s for the ol' collection. The LaLonge is blank backed, the Moore has a slight Aldon Candy stamp, and I am not sure, but looking at the Van Buren, it seems if it is not blank backed, it should have some writing showing.

That's a real blazer, Paul. Who cares if it's "authentic"? Buy the card, not the label, right?
Congrats on a beautiful Cy AC!

John, greetings from a Milwaukee native.
I have the Old Cardboard type prints on my bedroom wall, and, I have to say, I look at the cabinets more than anything else. There are a lot of gorgeous baseball card that have been issued (the T206 set and the 1953 Bowmans are all little works of art; great lithos and photography that captures the essence of the game; I'd also include the Goudey sets of the 1930s, and the Cracker Jacks, along with the Allen & Ginter N28s); but, for my taste, the Duke, Newsboy, et all cabs are the only thing that give challenge to the T3s where sheer beauty is concerned. And that George Davies of yours is a magnificent example of what I'm talking about. I like it even more because he went to UW-Madison, and played for the Brewers (even if it was the Brewers of the old American Association). Congrats on a really wonderful addition to your collection. How do you display these in your home, John? I'd like to pick up a few of the Cabs once I have a little bit more room (and money to spend). I'd have to mount them in my office. I just couldn't own them, and keep them locked away.

Feel very fortunate to pick this one up as a replacement for the SGC 40 that Brad pillaged from me earlier this month. Hey Brad!

I've always lurked on the pick-up threads, but I don't think I've ever posted myself. A buddy of mine picked up this T210 Bay for me at National. I picked up the Hindu Bay a while back from a fellow board member.

Nice pickups, Bryan - but, be careful, as OJs can be just as addictive as T206s! (Or, in my case, WaJo & Sam Rice cards)

Steven, thanks for the kind words. Actually, I now have only 3 of these O'Day cards in my collection. Right after O'Day was elected to the HOF, I put the worst-looking card on the far right on eBay, and it sold for much more than I ever expected. Shortly thereafter, I traded 1 of the 2 cards with the throwing pose. This left me with 1 card of each pose, which is my now-reduced OJ collecting goal for Washington players.
