Greatest Regional Sets .....

While we're on the subject of postwar regional / food issues, may I recommend a book I authored that debuted this spring? Written and edited over a period of several years, I finally secured full legal copyright last year. It was produced this year by the same firm that puts out the Krause Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards on a CD. As a 478-page book, it is easily read by inserting it into the disc drive of your computer or laptop. Some of the better known regionals discussed here are covered extensively. I believe you will enjoy it.

love the Wilson Wieners / 1958 Bell Brand / Dan Dee, etc...

I have zero of these, but the thus-far-unmentioned Rodeo Meats IMO are underrated aesthetically as well, in a 1949 Bowman context at least.

as shown in this thread, there's some great regional sets overall.

MikeGarcia --- I love your beautiful Chuck Connors card, and it's even autographed. Nice item.

Also, I strongly agree with you regarding those Rodeo Meats Kansas City A's. That's chapter 14 in my book, entitled CIVIC PRIDE PERSONIFIED. The gorgeous 1955 set is covered and it took 35 pages to tell its story; l love that chapter. I was very fortunate and blessed to be granted two meaningful interviews from a pair of guys who intensely collected them long ago.

Actually, Connors lived to be 71. What I heard growing up in LA is that he had trouble with the curve - don't really know if that was true..my dad told me!LOL. Some of my earliest TV memories is The Rifleman. About 8 years after that show was cancelled a friend and I came across him filming a TV movie on Ventura Blvd. We ducked into a doorway storefront across the street. Soon, between takes, he walked across the street to us and started chatting. "You know, you guys are in the background on film." "Sorry, do you want us to move?" "No, you stay right there". Anyway, that's one of my brushes with celebrity. Very nice guy!

1968 Atlantic Oil. A fun set to chase. It was a contest where collecting the right grouping of cards resulted in cash prizes on redemption.

There are 40 common cards. The common cards are a challenge in nice condition. They came in perforated two-card packets that were glued shut on the edges and the glue usually infiltrated onto the card fronts. Finding them without glue damage is tough.



And then there are the extremely short-printed chase cards that complete the money runs. I assume that nearly all SPs were redeemed and destroyed. I have been chasing this set for decades and have only seen two SPs ever, Williams and Osteen.



Another newspaper set here, 1960 Los Angeles Examiner Dodgers Album:



ca. 1947 Elgee Products. Used the images from 1947 Bond Bread but two sided with movie or other sports cards. PSA mislabels them as Bond Bread products:

1952 Fleet Wing Indians. Another regional gas issue, this one with an album that doesn't quite fit the premiums:




The cards have images that are not used on team issue picture pack sets or similar common all star picture pack sets, so they are a challenge for specialists in specific players. I bought the whole set to get the Al Rosen.

I forgot to mention this and feel it's only fair I let you know that Rich Mueller of SPORTS COLLECTORS DAILY loaded up an excerpt from my book, NEVER CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN. Tom Bartsch sent him chapter 1, concerning the test regional 1962 JELL-O baseball set.

If you're interested, go to SPORTS COLLECTORS DAILY, and just below their masthead is a group of categories to click on. In the upper right is "Popular Stories". Clicking on that, they are listed in chronological order by date, with the most recent first. The chapter is to be found at the bottom of page 5, dated May 18.

This would give you a little taste of my work. By no means do I write strictly about cards I own. Far from it, though some I lovingly covered I dearly wish I owned. Can't afford those anymore, but I still love those regional / food items!

The pictures in the 1952 Fleet Wing Indians are the same photos used in the 1952 Num Num (Potato chip) cards. I have about 15 of the Num Nums; with tabs are more valuable; The set has several HOFers -- Feller, Larry Doby (the photo is cool - it's in your Fleet Wing pictures), Bob Lemon, Early Wynn, plus Luke Easter and Al Rosen

Supposedly, one of the rarest post-war cards is the 1952 Num Num Bob Kennedy SP/redeem card, with the tab (PSA Pop 1, Authentic). I actually have a Kennedy PSA 4 without the tab, but there are about 15-20 of those in the PSA Pop.

There's also a 1950 Num Num set, but I've never seen any PSA encapsulated on eBay or in person
