Bnorth,
Incredible thread you start. Wow, I do like looking at all these great paintings. As many times as I have seen most of them, I love seeing them all again. The eyes on Christy are incredible. Mantle, is truly amazing. Jackie Robinson and Yogi, may be my favorite, but I can say that with all of them. Only thing better then these beauties is.........MORE. BRING ON MORE.

The sheer viciousness of the Cobb slide painting makes it one of my favorites. I don't think I'd want it hanging it my apartment though. All I see is the darkness in my soul every time I look at it. The '86 Mets team with the excited Gary Carter and the Mariano running out to the mound are my other two favorites.

Also, +1 on the Christy Mathewson. That painting really brings so much life to the photograph that inspired it. It's the total opposite of the Cobb slide painting. It's full of such light and hope.

My very favorite Kreindler belongs to someone else. It is entitled "Beast Bangs Gomez" and shows Jimmie Foxx scoring after hitting his third consecutive home run of the day off of Lefty Gomez at Shibe Park in 1933. The bluesy feel, the physical movement, those god-wonderful baggy flannels. You could hate baseball and still love this painting. Honorable Mention to the Matty portrait and to the 1917 Red Sox Ruth pitching on opening day, and to any Yankee Stadium painting from the 1950s. I was there and I'll vouch that Graig always nails the sunlight and shadows of that grand ball yard. You can smell the cigar smoke. ![]() Last edited by Kawika; 04-11-2016 at 12:22 PM. |
