That card is a natural rough cut from the factory. In the past, there has been a lot of misinformation posted about rough cuts. None of the TPGs downgrade for rough cuts. There is a misconception that they do. As far as your card goes, it looks like a solid 7 to me (maybe higher). That bottom right corner does concern me. From the scan, I can't tell if it's wear or if it's part of the rough cut.

Thank you. That right lower corner ? is an issue. The right lower corner could be just bent upward a bit causing it to look that way?
If you take the right lower corner ? problem out of the equation, why would the card not grade out at higher than a 7 or 7 1/2. I thought that the card might grade out at a NM-MT Plus. Grading is tough and I am just trying to get to be a better grader. Any tips you can give me will be much appreciated. |

PSA has photo examples that accompany their written grading standards. This link is to the '52 Mantle in each of the 10 grades. There are a few other examples using different cards. Your exact condition issue may not be perfectly depicted but I find this visual guide useful at times. Perhaps you'll find it interesting. Andy

Thanks for your reply. Can you offer me your opinion on the grade of the card and why you think it wouldn't grade higher than that.
Just trying to learn. Thanks! |

You may/will have better sucess by posting this in the other forum, Postwar Baseball Cards Forum (Pre-1980).
Having said that. The top-bottom centering may keep this out of the NM-MT range and the bottom right corner may as well (as speculated above). But you never know until you send it in. Follow the link that Andy posted. It's a pretty good start to learning. |
