Default Old Girlfriend Syndrome (T206)

Picture this... you are checking out T206s on eBay, and you see a card that grabs your interest. You used to have one and sold or traded it, so you pull up the listing. And there she is.
Same creases, paper loss, dings or whatever. That is her. She was once yours. You remember her and all her splendor.

Happened to me twice this week.

How many of you has had this happen? Doesn't have to be The Monster.

I sold a bunch of 1952 high grade cards and I have a file on my computer for the scans...I have checked cert numbers to see if it was the same card but so far it hasn't.

Yup a Roger Clemens buyback auto it's still on eBay .

I sold a 1968 topps mantle that had a million creases.
It also had a erased pencil check mark on it . So needless to
Say it was the same card . The mantle I could care less about .

Last year, I bought back one of my first Old Judge cards, a low grade Con Daley. I had to sell it and a couple other cards to fund a purchase back in 2001. Then I ended up buying the Daley off the person who I made the 2001 purchase from, even though they weren't the one who bought the Daley off me back in 2001.

Basically, it took 14 years for the Daley to go from me to them, they posted a picture here, I recognized the card and got it back home.

I sold a D304 Cobb graded by SGC many years ago. I kept seeing that same card going from one auction to another. I haven't seen it in a few years now but it was being passed around like a rock groupie for a while.

I have seen it a few times. Once it was my same scan and I bought the card back for less than I sold it for.

I happen to see my first t206 red Cobb on ebay last year. Double checked the psa serial number to be sure.

LOL. Yeah, that is a great line. But very accurate with a lot of cards.
Very good comment.

I somehow (very lucky, as I almost never look for cars) found my old 1970 Plymouth Barracuda relished on ebay several years after selling it, and it was on the opposite coast.

I sold my first major batch of cards right here on N54 this past year, and saw the first pop up on eBay this week. One being a Leaf Jackie Robinson (was BVG-3, now graded PSA-2), the other a 1941 Play Ball Williams (was raw, now graded PSA-3). The Williams closed tonight. It was weird seeing it up for sale (I'd owned it for 15-16 years) and I was tempted to bid it, but held off.

What do they look like? Do they have pointy corners?

As for cards from my collection being sold, I see them every day. Have some back and I am sure a few others will make their way back again too.

Ok, now we know that Leon likes pointy corners in his women. Do other guys here like a "well centered" woman? What about qualifiers Leon? Do we add points or half grades if the woman has a "mute" qualifier?

So at some point collectors will have paid more in auction fees in aggregate than the card is worth. Doesn't seem right and/or efficient.

Eric,

There's a little story that goes with that D304 card.

I purchased the card a long, long time ago for about $75 (yup, it was a long time ago). I had the card graded by SGC and it came back a "1" (lucky to get that grade). After picking up a cleaner D304 Cobb I figured why not get rid of the ugly one.

I post it on ebay for $1200, no bites on it.

About two months later I post it on ebay for $1400. I get an email from someone saying they'd be happy to pay $1200 for it. Well, the new price was $1400 and that was that. The card didn't sell. I really didn't care if I sold it or not.

About 2 months later I put the card on ebay for $1600. I get an email from someone saying they'd be happy to pay $1400 for it. Well, the new price was $1600 and that was that. The card didn't sell.

About 2 months later I put the card on ebay for $1800. I get an email from someone saying they'd be happy to pay $1600 for it. Well, the new price was $1800 and that was that. Finally the person ponied up the $1800 for that card.

A while later I see that card in an auction and it looks like someone is going to take a bath on that card because it was selling for under the $1800 I sold it for. More time passes, I see the card again and it sells for less than the price I sold it for. Then I see it again and the bidding is in the $2K range.

I really didn't get it. Why the hell would someone pester me to buy that card and then take a loss on it like that. Then I remember hearing some controversy about the card when the card was being bid over $2K.

In the end, I just chuckled a bit because I couldn't imagine someone really wanting that card so badly because it was every bit the "1" that SGC gave it.

I had one that I enjoyed for awhile but unloaded it because it had "football shaped" sides. It got trimmed up and is now more highly sought after.

Wait.......what were we talking about again?

Given that I'm okay with t206s that have paper stuck to their backsides, I can't make that claim.

Well, this Wagner was my father's from 1974 - 1984. He recognized it when it went up for auction in 2013. Unmistakeable with that slanted border:
