Similar feeling--but on a much lower budget--when I got a '61 Hank Aaron AS to complete my Topps run on Aaron. Soothed the emptiness by finally plunking down for the 55 Bowman.
I wasn't interested enough in the oddballs to spend what it would take, so I finally faced the fact that there have been three players I've wanted cards from nearly my entire life, but unfortunately not at all attainable for the money I was spending: Ruth, Gehrig, and DiMaggio. Picked up the Joe D a few months ago and may finally go after the Babe in early 2016. Easy to think up pricier fixes, but something you might try is to find a fun and not very expensive goal--maybe all of Willie's bobbleheads or some stuff to surround your card on a wall or shelf display.

I would mind doing a run of his cards but the next two 1952 and 1953 topps will be very pricey .

Great looking card. Thanks for sharing! It's kind of odd but the 51 Mays is what stopped me in my tracks when I was working on a post-war HOF rookie run. Got the Mantle and a number of others but that card just got away from me in price. Great stuff and I hope you are able to find something to capture your interest and get you back in the game again.

Not sure if this thread sparked it or if it was the really attractive, low-grade Sport Kings Carl Hubbell in the PWCC auction, but I just got to thinking about how maybe my "Top 50" card display (oddly except to me, one card of each of the Top 50 players who played between 1933 and 1969)--even once it adds Ruth/Gehrig--still leaves off too many great players of the 1930s: Hubbell, Gehringer, Dickey, etc.
An easy solution would be to remove a few of the guys I have there just because...e.g., 1933 Lefty O'Doul, 1933 Hack Wilson, 1964 Roger Maris... and then replace them with better players. But then I got to thinking how maybe the better approach is to add a second Pennzoni display case and go after the top 100, perhaps from 1933-1979. If so, I've got a REALLY long way to go before I'm all done.
