One has to really love and want the 9s in question, to buy a bunch of them seeking a 10 on a review of all of them. It also is pricey to review a bunch of expensive 9s, which one has to take into account.
So if one already has the group of 9s or genuinely wants to keep them, that's one thing. But most collectors might be hesitant to commit the resources to a cluster of examples of one expensive card, and then the additional cost of the review process. If the 10 doesn't hit, what does one then do, sell them all but one favorite, likely taking a loss with commissions and fees, if the sales are short term? Even if the 10 is hit, depending on the value, and how many 9s are in question, and their value, selling the now superfluous 9s may really eat into the profit of that 10. In sum there are many variables, with respect to each collector's specific goals and resources. |

and more than happy to address those variables, matt:
i have 5 basic topps ryan sets. Quote:
the buy prices on my 9s have ranged from $800 - $1200. naturally this is over the course of 5 or so years. haven't bought a 9 in the past 8 months however 9s seem to be fetching $2K these days. again i'm not a dealer or a speculator. they are in my collection and even though the last 10 went for 40k, i'm not cashing in on this one. she's been tucked away. even if one didn't cross and/or was in it for the flip/money, a case could certainly be made for sticking w/ this process as well. buy, hold, attempt to cross and still quite a bundle to be made either way. again, to each their own but even if the 10 didn't hit, it's a win-win scenario. |

Didn't mean to ask for all your specifics, Begsu. That said, this particular scenario is a win-win for you, based on your specifics, especially when the cards were bought, their appreciation since, and of course achieving the desirable outcome of hitting the ten-- all backed up, so to speak, by a collector actually enjoying the cards for a collection. Point being that the strategy stated, as positive as it was in this case, is not necessarily a viable one for all collectors. Congrats on the outcome and what matters is that a collector is happy with his cards.

Great Venezuelans! Such rare but under priced and under appreciate sets, at least in my opinion.

Nice Bakep Matt. A "variation" recognized hobby wide back in the days before eBay and the proliferation in availability in card scans. Since then hundreds of similar scarce but recurring print defects, some much more dramatic have bee found but carry no premium and are mostly ignored in the hobby. Your Dad was astute and got in on "the ground floor"

Thanks Al. This card will always be special to me. I remember asking my dad what was the toughest card for him to track down for his collection. I guessed the '52 Mick. He said no, that it was by far the Bakep. He could make a call and get a Mick. The Bakep he had to hunt for. I think eBay has made it easier to find but I still rate it as a very tough card.

I was at the Philly Show today and picked up a few cards. Two of them were Pre-War, so I shall post them on that side of the board. The other two are shown here.
1. Johnny Bench Rookie One of several cards I picked up lately that I have been chasing (even if only in my subconscious) since childhood. It always seemed just out of reach...until today. For those who may be wondering, it is a PSA 5. The holder is inconsequential to me, though. The card presents nicely, and shows (in my opinion) the best catcher the game has ever seen, before any of us knew how great he would become. 2. 1952 Topps Connie Ryan I recently picked up a few '52 Topps cards, including Richie Ashburn. On the way out of the show today, I spent the last few bucks in my pocket on this card. The '52 Topps are beautiful, in my opinion, and I believe they are the Post-War equivalent of T206. I will definitely be putting together the Phillies team set, even if the high numbers take a little while. For those who care to know, this example is a PSA 4.5

Been a good month, with some Prewar cards, but also some good solid Postwar/Modern stuff too.
Thanks to fellow Net54'ers for some of these pickups, with the rest mostly via eBay. Really pleased with the centering on the Jordan and Gretzky rookies, both of which can be tough. A good solid month looking back ![]()

That is exactly my philosophy as well. My focus will always be on vintage baseball, but the idea of having the truly key cards from other sports in my collection is attractive, too. On the Gretzky, I'm very glad I picked up the Topps version as opposed to the OPC -- In no parallel universe could I justify spending 3x more for the card, just to have the Canadian version. To each his own though. And I definitely don't want to start a debate on the relative merits of Canadian cardboard... ![]()

technically a july pick up but just got back from psa. absolutely love this card for the back:
![]() ![]() normally these are blank backed stickers however this one was in the album and removed... upon plucking it someone inadvertently removed some of the album, which means on the reverse/opposite side of the album paper it had "hecho en venezuela" which is what is normally written on other regular topps veni cards. have seen a baker's dozen or so of these, but it's the first w/ this type of added bonus some might view this as an eye sore and almost certainly hurt the technical grade , but I personally think it makes the card! |

Beautiful. About six months ago, I picked up that same card as my first Robinson card.
It's great too oooh and aaah over PSA 8's and 9's, but I find it's even better for someone to be "super excited to add my first Jackie Robinson card". Collecting for the love of actually owning something, regardless of the potential payback, is admirable. Congrats... |
