I did a double-take on the Cairo Monopol back before fully realizing what was going on. Nice curveball, Ted. You just struck me out.

How about this one from Mantle regarding Pete Rose.

"If I had played my career hitting singles like Pete (Rose), I'd wear a dress."

Mickey Mantle

Speaking of Pete Rose, a quote that captured his essence: I'd walk through hell in a gasoline suit to play baseball.

To many to list but a few of my favorites..

"When a pitcher's throwing a spitball, don't worry and don't complain, just hit the dry side like I do." Stan Musial

"I wished I'da known Paul was goin' to pitch a no-hitter," complained the irrepressible Dean afterward. "I'da pitched one too." Dizzy Dean after throwing a shut out in the first game of a double header only to have his brother Paul throw a no-hitter in the night cap.

"I ain't ever had a job, I just always played baseball." Satchel Paige

"Baseball has been good to me since I quit trying to play it." Whitey Herzog

"Hell, If I'd known 40–40 was going to be a big deal, I'd have done it every year!" Mickey Mantle

"I'll never make the mistake of being 70 again." Casey Stengel After being fired by the Yankees for being too old to manage.

Hat trick from Uecker:

The best way to catch a knuckleball is to wait until the ball stops rolling and then pick it up.

I knew when my career was over. In 1965 my baseball card came out with no picture.

Anybody with ability can play in the big leagues. But to be able to trick people year in and year out the way I did, I think that was a much greater feat.

Default Ty Cobb Qoute

Louis Prima: With all the great players playing ball right now, how well do you think you would do against today's pitchers?

Ty Cobb: Well, I figure against today's pitchers I'd only probably hit about .290

Louis Prima: .290? Well that's amazing, because you batted over .400 a... a whole bunch of times. Now tell us all, we'd all like to know, why do you think you'd only hit .290?

Ty Cobb: Well, I'm 72 fucking years old you ignorant son of a bitch.

Mickey Mantle once said that Billy Martin was the only guy he knows who "could hear someone give him the finger."

Players joked about Casey Stengel's flatulence. "Like a damn goat fart," Mantle said. "When he was alone on the other side of the dugout, he wasn't just thinking."

Default More Satchel Paige

I'll go with this Satchel Paige quote of Oscar Charleston:

"The man was so fast he could turn out the lights and be in his bed before the room got dark!"

I've never heard of this quote being about Oscar Charleston, but usually in reference to Cool Papa Bell. Also used by Muhammed Ali, obviously a great line appropriated by many nonetheless.....
