In the minors in 1888, one of the opposing players was talking trash to Larry Corcoran while he was at the plate and he called the player a "field ornament", while also noting how bad he was defensively. I've used that line while talking about a player that has no defensive value

Another with 13 players who were with the Pittsburgh Pirates during the regular season, but never played a game. There's also one about 27 baseball families, as well as a day-by-day look at the worst team in Pittsburgh Pirates history. How about this one from Mantle regarding Pete Rose.
"If I had played my career hitting singles like Pete (Rose), I'd wear a dress." Mickey Mantle

Speaking of Pete Rose, a quote that captured his essence: I'd walk through hell in a gasoline suit to play baseball.

To many to list but a few of my favorites..
"When a pitcher's throwing a spitball, don't worry and don't complain, just hit the dry side like I do." Stan Musial "I wished I'da known Paul was goin' to pitch a no-hitter," complained the irrepressible Dean afterward. "I'da pitched one too." Dizzy Dean after throwing a shut out in the first game of a double header only to have his brother Paul throw a no-hitter in the night cap. "I ain't ever had a job, I just always played baseball." Satchel Paige "Baseball has been good to me since I quit trying to play it." Whitey Herzog "Hell, If I'd known 40–40 was going to be a big deal, I'd have done it every year!" Mickey Mantle "I'll never make the mistake of being 70 again." Casey Stengel After being fired by the Yankees for being too old to manage. |

Hat trick from Uecker:
The best way to catch a knuckleball is to wait until the ball stops rolling and then pick it up. I knew when my career was over. In 1965 my baseball card came out with no picture. Anybody with ability can play in the big leagues. But to be able to trick people year in and year out the way I did, I think that was a much greater feat.
