I always loved this one of many by Satchel Paige:
"Avoid fried foods, They angry up the blood".

Wouldn't be a thread without these two from The Georgia Peach
"Baseball is a red-blooded sport for red-blooded man. It's no pink tea, and mollycoddles had better stay out. It's a struggle for supremacy, survival of the fittest." "I had to fight all my life to survive. They were all against me... but I beat them and left them in the ditch." Another favorite: Rogers Hornsby was so respected as a hitter that once, when a rookie pitcher complained to umpire Bill Klem that he thought he had thrown Rogers a strike, Klem replied, "Son, when you pitch a strike, Mr. Hornsby will let you know."

Jered Weaver after signing a 5 year $85M contract, when many thought he could have gotten maybe $60M more somewhere else:
“How much more do you need? Could have got more, whatever. Who cares? If $85 million is not enough to take care of my family and generations to come, then I’m pretty stupid.” |

Pretty sure it was Coach John McCay during a post game interview during the Tampa Bay Bucs 26 game losing streak.
REPORTER-"coach can you comment on the offensive side of the ball`s execution"? McCay- "I`m in favor of it" . classic !!!

Oil Can also commented after a game in Cleveland got postponed due to fog: "That's what they get for building a stadium right on the ocean."

I heard Tony Gwynn tell the story that when Rickey Henderson had recently joined the Padres, he walked onto the team bus and looked around for a seat. He says to anyone that can hear, "Where's Rickey going to sit?" Steve Finley responds to Rickey, "Rickey, you can sit anywhere you want...you have tenure." In vintage Rickey fashion, he replies, "Tenure, man, Rickey got 15 year"
To hear Tony Gwynn tell it was great since he could barely get through the story without cracking up. I was never a huge Henderson fan until I heard his HOF speech and came to realize how much he absolutely loved the game of baseball. What a great character! Mark |
