They are not separated, there is a rubber band in there
 . I don't think it has caused much of a problem for the red backs since it is at the perforation, but there are 4 or 6 Current or Connie Mack All Stars in there as well ( tall cards with red fronts), and on those the rubber band is around the cards themselves
