They are not CdV's, which are small photographs about the size of a modern day baseball card. These appear to be imperial cabinets.

Could be track and field teams too. Some of them look a bit scrawny for either sculling or gymnastics. Those would be the distance runners.

And the guy Chris pointed out seems to have a good deal of imbalance between left and right. Which would make some sense for one of the weight events - shotput, discus, maybe hammer throw. The era didn't have the spinning runups they use now, they were more straight line so arm strength mattered more.
