No offense to Tom Haller but Topps couldn't put Kaline,Lolich, Horton or any other Tiger in the IA series. They did manage to put Billy Martin in there. I guess they figured Haller was at least as good as other catchers like Mitterwald, Barton, Blefary,Corrales etc. Topps had a thing for bad catchers in 1972.

I just went through my 72 set. It's interesting who got an I/A card, and who did not.

Many "common" players did (Alan Galagher, Pat Corrales????) and many All Stars (Gibson and Brock for 2) did not.

I believe the Cardinals with Torre,Brock, Gibson, Carlton and the Orioles with the Robinsons, Powell, Palmer, McNally etc had none while teams like the Giants, A,s, Mets and Yanks all had at least 10. Tim Foli or John Ellis never excited me living in New York

All of the 1972 Topps In Action cards were photographed at Shea Stadium, Yankee Stadium, Candlestick Park, and the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum, I assume in 1971, apparently the Topps photographers didn't make it to any Cardinal or Oriole games in those stadiums that year.

Default Good one

I remember that card well. Thought they did a pretty good air-brush job, especially given some of the monstrosities that can be found in that set. Problem is, it jumps off the page immediately as off because no one would have ever seen a Twins player in an ivy-walled stadium. Too bad, because the photo itself and the centering of it in the card are great.
