![]() But yes, Mike does have good internet search skills. I found that photo while searching for a 1924 pic of Clark Griffith - my search skills were not so great ![]()

Whenever I want to see images from the LoC website, I just search ebay for vintage photos...

That's not to say that this isn't a good topic for discussion. There is certainly a wealth of quality images on the LoC website, and many that would be interesting to know the whole story on. It's just unfortunate that so many ebay sellers with a desktop printer and pack of photo paper have tapped into it for free source material.

No problem. I don't search ebay for modern reprints, so while I am aware that they are a problem, and even that many are taken from the loc site, there isn't anyway that they can compete in clarity with the massive TIF files on the loc site. I thought that was obvious, but it could be that you all are missing the download options on each photo's page.
You can download the huge TIF files and then edit on your own - many can be enhanced substantially, not just through cropping, but also to improve exposure, contrast and tint. The Bain photos in particular can stand some clean-up, as many are simply glass negative that haven't held up too well. I needed a good Clark Griffith portrait - here's what I came up with:
