Erik, I'm so glad you asked about the '65 set, because it gives me a chance to talk about my favorite postwar set. I'm going to go beyond your topic.
The '65s were my first cards. I was eight years old back then. I recently finished my '65 set. All of them are PSA 9s: My favorite card was Yastrzemski. The way he was posed making a catch just seemed so cool; I grew up in Chicago as a Cubs fan, and I loved the Santo and Williams cards' but I hated the big head Ernie Banks. He looks like a baloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade; I'm disappointed by the rookie cards. The most valuable Morgan, Pezez, Carlton and Hunter are shared with Fritz Ackley and Sonny Jackson. I hate that multi-player format; One final thought: back then whenever we opened a pack, the cards we hoped for were Mays, Mantle, or Koufax. The guys who are famous now like Rose, Clemente and Aaron were popular, but not close to Willie and Mick. And for some reason, every other pack seemed to contain Gary Bell. I think I had about 15 of him back then. Sorry I got off topic. Here are some cards that I mentioned (though ironically I can't find my Gary Bell right now). scan0006.jpg scan0005.jpg scan0007.jpg scan0003.jpg scan0004.jpg |
