November Pickups
Well, a four year search has come to an end and my OCD has been fed! One of my projects is Yankees retired #'s and I try to get all of the guys on 3x5s in blue sharpie or blue ink (for the older guys such as Ruth and Gehrig). You may remember a post I made before where I mentioned that I got a print signed by Mattingly and Mantle because Mattingly was my favorite player and my grandma's was The Mick. I lost my grandma at the end of July and I think she helped bring this one to me, but I finally found my Mickey Mantle 3x5 in blue sharpie! I want to also thank the couple great members on this forum that were nice enough to offer their opinion of the piece when asked via PM. I love it! Just a couple more to go

Congratulations it is a beautiful item I was the under bidder on this, but backed off for some other items coming up this month. One reason was that I failed to ask if the album is intact, and I did not want to purchase an intact album to get another Wilbert Robinson auto for my collection when the other autos did not mean that much to me personally, and I did not want to break up the album if it was intact. Just curious if it is intact , and will you keep it that way if it is?

I am not sure if the album is fully intact. I do not believe I will be ripping it apart if it were. The duplicate autos are finer autos than versions I already have, so those will be sold to keep the ones included in the album. Gotta wait and see once it arrives at my door. Saw the auction not only as an opportunity to get a Robinson (and for cheap considering the dups I can sell), but an overall quality upgrade on the other guys.

My birthday conversion gift
About 6 months ago a Carl Erskine piece came up for sale on the BST that I always had admired. I was talking to my wife about it and told her how much I liked it. I had the money to purchase it but it would have drained my savings for something else I was saving for. My wife asked how much I wanted it and said she would purchase it for my birthday but I couldn't look at it until then. I agreed and have been so excited about it but wanted to personalize it a bit more so I contacted Dave (Dave's resale shop) who originally matted and framed the piece my wife bought. He gave me some advice and helped me by cutting a new larger matting and sending it to me along with a Pee Wee Reese from an autograph book he purchased.
In the mean time I found a larger photo of Carl Erskine that I liked and sent it to him requesting him to add all the names of the strikeout victims in the record setting game he pitched in the 1953 World Series game. I built a new larger frame put in the new matting and added a card. I took the smaller frame and replaced the pieces with the Reese auto, card and photo. I know these don't compare to most collections I view on the board but I think the Erskine is truly a unique piece and will be a favorite in collection for years to come. A special thanks the Dave's resale shop for the help,and advice as well as Scott (gray ghost) who had to give up one of his pieces in a tough time. Scott, I hope you enjoy what I came up with. The auction on the 1953 Bowman Color card ends tonight, and I'm really hoping to win the card. I'm going to build the entire set, and that would be the first card I have that's not SGC graded. I was thinking about sending that card off to him to see if he would kindly autograph it. I'd love to relate my story to him, as well as my appreciation of the Dodgers as a whole. My fingers are crossed.

By the way, I'm almost certain that you've seen this as a Dodgers fan. But on the off chance that you haven't, I have a documentary that HBO did on the Dodgers called Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghosts of Flatbush. I recorded it last August, and I've probably watched it about 10 times by now. I'm going to watch it again this morning. I love it, and it really hammers home just how special the franchise was. I'm not old enough to really identify with Brooklyn fans that way, because while Milwaukee lost the Braves to Atlanta, by the time I was born in September of 1971, the city had already acquired the Brewers, who had, of course, been the new expansion Seattle Pilots in 1969. So I've never known my city to not have a baseball team (though the jokes have been made that the city didn't have a Major League Baseball team throughout much of the 90s, just a minor league team renting out County Stadium.
 Anyhow, if you haven't seen it, Drew, it's a must see. HBO Sports can't do enough baseball documentaries to keep me happy. They can do no wrong.  The doc they did on Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams are permanently saved on my DVR. If that thing ever goes, I don't know what I would do besides pray that HBO shows it again. I think the Mantle is available on DVD, so I may have to pick it up. I'd pay handsomely for all of them.

Since I now know we have an autograph forum (I think in the back of my mind I may have previously acknowledged that we had one, but I'd never really thought to explore it), if you will please excuse me for a third post in this month's thread, I'd like to ask the opinion of our board members on this autograph I received a few months ago.
This was given to me as a gift by somebody on Facebook who was involved in a baseball discussion with me. He wished to thank me for the time I'd put in constructing my supporting documentation, which ultimately helped to prove a position he'd taken in a friendly discussion about WAR relevancy in comparing players from the golden era. I was told it was a Willie Mays autograph acquired within the last couple of years. I graciously accepted, and after doing a cursory look up of his signature online, I set it aside to research more in the future. While there are certainly some characteristics of the signature that closely resemble those demonstrated in other examples, I am about as far from being a forensic document examiner as there is, so handwriting analysis is not my forte. I admit, however, that I would love to be able to collect signatures of the great baseball players, but before I'd ever spend any serious money on that pursuit, I'd want to make sure I had the requisite tools to do so safely.  I am vaguely familiar with the methodology involved, but I do not know which exemplars should be employed when examining Willie's autograph. Obviously, his signature now could appear altogether different from his signature given out during his playing days. So, I will provide this scan, and defer to the judgement of you fine folks. Thank you! Bill PS. This scan has was originally done at 600 dpi, and then reduced 6 x. That is how I've always done my vintage and pre-war cards, because it creates a large scan that I can always pull up at original size.
