1952 Topps Discussion?

I'm also interested in finding out where other 52 topps collectors get their cards. Online, local shops, events, etc.?

I worked quite a bit with Levi Bleam at 707 Sports Cards over the years. Also ebay. Not so much shows, there ar not many of them in south Texas . Also, check out BST section here

My understanding is the gray backs are found in cards 130-190.

I recently got this Monte Kennedy (124) and the back especially seemed to match the look of some of the gray back pictures I've seen. Is it possible it's a gray back, or just darker?

Welcome aboard. I am currently working on a mid-grade, raw 1952 set. At this point, my goal is to collect the low series (1-310). This is a very cool and iconic set and I am enjoying the journey. If you are patient and persistent, you can find some good deals. I have picked up several 52's from the B/S/T section. Lots of great folks on here to deal with.

The scarce "Canadian" gray backs occur only in cards 131 to 190. Your card 124 back is normal

The Monte Kennedy card is a gray back ... but every card #1-130 and #191-407 is a gray back.

Cards #131-190 were primarily printed with a white/cream back (no one know why), but a small handful of sheets (probably under 25, definitely under 50) were also printed with gray backs (again no one knows why).

So you have a gray back ... but there is no rare variation for that card.

Yes, Kennedy is a gray - but all Kennedys are gray backs. The gray back refers to the color of the card stock that was used for the cards. Cards numbered from 1-130 are all gray back. Cards above number 190 are all gray backs. Cards in the range of 131 to 190 were primarily printed on cream colored card stock. There were a very limited number of the 131-190 that escaped on gray card stock and are significantly more valuable than their cream colored twins.
