Loved watching him pilot the 89 Cubs to a division title. RIP Popeye!

If you're interested, see my blog post here on my amazing and unique Zimmer story--I saw his last, in the minors, when he activated himself as player, and he hit it off Jim Palmer (and Earl Weaver told me this is all true).

Got this auto at the "Cubs Caravan" in Indianapolis somewhere in the 1989-1990 time frame. We'll miss you Zim!

I was in the RF bleachers for about 35-40 games that year, "The Boys of Zimmer". I enjoyed his unconventional style. RIP to a baseball lifer who goes way back. What a great life to spend it all in baseball.

I was in left field for a few of those games. Every play he put on that season worked like a charm. Watching Mitch Williams in the 9th put a few more wrinkles on that magnificent face!

Default RIP Mr. Zimmer

We as fans who never met him, will miss him.

One of the worse days I ever experienced as a fan was when Pedro Martinez pushed him down. I'm still a big fan of Pedro but that was WRONG!

Damn.

Whenever I think of a baseball lifer, a guy who has seen it all I think of Don Zimmer. Oh sure, there are others but to me Zimmer epitomized that kind of man. I think it's because they would always say that the only paycheck Zim ever got was through professional baseball. RIP Zim.

I distinctly remember having a sweet 57 topps zimmer as a child...it was a sweet card...and I liked it before I knew anything about Zim. A lucky man to have spent it all in baseball...what a dream...

Default Don Zimmer

I remember seeing him play for the cubs in the early 60s.
I was a little leaguer then and proudly kept his baseball card for years.
It is sad to hear that he has died.

my condolences to family, friends, and fans,

barry

I really like Zimmer and considered him a prominent and colorful character. Classic baseball guy. That said, and no disrespect intended, I have seen the description "baseball great" thrown around quite a bit, which is probably a stretch. OTOH, I think we all deserve a little exaggeration at the time of our demise
