Not exactly sure. They are factory cut tabs (and the ones on the left and right are missing). My guess is that folded into a panel on the back so that it could stand up. But if anyone knows for sure or has another idea please let me know!

Great stuff Ted.....here is an Irelands ad from a large magazine (12 x 9) from the 1920s and 4 boxes from my shelf . I believe they were the predecessor to Curtis Irelands, of E123 fame.
