Oh, that card is definitely worth $2,500 ....but not a penny more!

I hate losing out on cards that I was willing to overpay by hundreds or thousands of dollars on. Hate it, hate it, hate it.

I wanted to capture the emotion of that -- while also acknowledging that I was being totally hypocritical.

I hear ya...I once bid $700 on a Nebraska Indians cover letter, and was astounded that I got outbid...and I'm pretty sure I even told myself that it wasn't worth anywhere near that.

If people are being totally honest with themselves you are capturing how many under-bidders feel.

I guess Ted finally took pity on me -- thanks for keeping me in mind when it was time to move this beauty on...

As Barry said 9 months ago, the 'card-lust 2 bidder' thing is a common and cherished part of our hobby. Some of our greatest stories come from such events. I've been involved in some of those, but oddly, can only remember winning one. Still, it's been fun to watch others involved in those dogfights at two in the morning. More than a few times I've gone to bed scratching my head.

Glad to hear you finally got your Marquard - probably makes you appreciate it that much more.

Default winning and losing

When I win a scarce item at a price higher than I was hoping to pay, I just think, "bet that son of a gun wished had bid higher, hah".

If I lose it I just think, "I bet that son of a gun is pretty mad about having to pay so much, hah "
