Fittingly, the Baltimore Ravens were the last team to have a shut-out going into the half. Seattle may have the best defense since that team - perhaps better. Also fittingly, Indianapolis scored the most points against them that year.
I need 28 more points for the t-shirt - two touchdowns by each team? By the way - has anyone heard "Omaha"?

Read my post again. I said he was average against good teams.
During the regular season, Manning gets to play against a lot of bad teams and his record reflects this. Against those teams he does things the same way every time and even if they know what is coming they can't stop it because they are bad. Against good teams, Manning does the same thing over and over again and they know what is coming and they can and do stop it. That is why he only has a .500 record in hte psot season. In the post season, there aren't a lot of bad teams. So Manning plays against better teams and has an average record against them. Actually, he has a below average record against them because his teams have lost games in the first round that they probably shouldn't have lost. If Manning would ditch some of his arrogance and run a trick play or two, those good teams wouldn't just sit back and know what is coming and have the right defense called against it. The Saints ran a couple of trick plays against the Colts in the Super Bowl and they won. The Seahawks have run a couple of trick plays and they are winning. Manning, as usual, is doing the same things the same way over and over and look what the results have been so far. The Seahawks know what is coming, they are getting their defense ready and they are succeeding. David |

Trick plays are not the difference maker for Seattle.. they are 100% more physical and tougher than Denver (and most of the rest of the league) and that shows on every defensive snap... that along with some nice offensive execution, especially on third down and they are just beating crap out of a softer team.
I really hope Manning and Co mount some kind of comeback in the 2nd half (just to make it interesting), but I don't see it happening. Little dinky/dunky passes rack up a lot of yards against secondaries that can't tackle, but Seattle has one of the best tackling secondaries I've ever seen... and they are ALWAYS close to the ball to contest throws. I do see your point re- Manning vs great teams and do agree he's struggled more against good teams.. most QBs do, except the Joe Montana's/Tom Brady's/etc that always seemed to elevate their play against the best. Jeff,
Absoulutely can not stand teh Red SOx (or Yankees) and I think the Patriots are a bunch of cheaters. As far as Manning taking teams to the post season that might not have gotten there if another QB was guiding them that is a fair point. However, my point still stands. A guy with his stats and a regular season winning percentage over 67 percent and only a .500 record in the post season can't be considered anything but average AGAINST GOOD TEAMS. Manning was on some good teams in Indy and he lost in the first round with them. I think the same can be said for Denver last year. Going into this game, I didn't hear anybody saying that the Broncos were lucky to be there or that they were an average team who rode a late season hot streak into the play offs. No, all I heard was that they were one of the best, if not the best, teams in the NFL. Playing against another good team, the Broncoes sure don't look like they are a good team and Manning isn't performing like a world beater. And, again, I LIVE in Central Indiana and am a Manning fan. I just don't let that get in the way of seeing reality. Also, people say that Andrew Luck is another Peyton Manning. I hope not. I hope Luck learns that he CAN run the ball if he has to and that "gimmick" plays (laterals, reverses, flea flickers) are in the rule books and are legal so USE them. IF not as succesful plays then just to throw the opposing defenses off and give them something else to look at. David |

Re- Luck, I think he has a great chance to have a career that exceeds Manning's as a winner. He'll NEVER out stat Manning, but he's also 100% concerned with winning however need be... you don't see him checking out of run plays inside the 2 so he can throw yet another TD, or break records.. you see him just getting it done (ugly, pretty, checking to a run, etc). I really like Manning, and always have, but I've also never seen anyone who seems so aware of his stats.. nor have I ever seen someone throw the ball so much inside the 5 yard line, or continue to rack up passing stats into the 3rd/4th quarter of games that are basically over. More power to him (and his fantasy owners), he's great, but stats don't always equal win (see Super Bowl XIX- Montana v Marino, or Giants v Bills).

I don't think Manning needs trick plays. He just needs to be able to run every now and then. That would kind of be a trick play for him. I wouldn't be surprised to see Denver do some bootlegs the second half.

Don't care who wins but would enjoy a semblance of a game.

Ian, I'm really hoping San Francisco is good enough to get back to Seattle for next year's NFC Championship game (assuming Dallas chokes again). I know I said earlier I hoped it would be in S.F., but that' probably not going to happen.
I will buy the first round next year if it happens.

Seattle is this good... Denver isn't doing the AFC much credit, but Seattle is damn good. This said from a lifelong Niner fan, who's dying knowing we'd be taking it to the Broncos right now as well.

Thought the game was going to be close. Manning showed zero arm strength, I mean zero. There appeared to be no wind, so no excuses there. Thought at first I was just reading into all the ducks comments, but after watching Wilson zipping fastballs, I saw a quarterback in orange who threw the ball with no authority. None. You want to make a really good defensive team look even better? Throw nothing but short and slot passes with no velocity, let the backs shorten the field even further. Manning looked really weak. As far as defensive pressure, it was there, but was he knocked down, sacked? Balls were deflected, etc., but he only threw the ball deep, what, twice? A D-back dream.
Scoreboard, Seattle.

My earlier points came true:
Defense wins Championships. Manning isn't effective when under pressure...although he wasn't sacked he was hurried on a bunch of important downs...notice that the Defense allowed those weak 4 yd passes all day long and for some reason that seemed to make the Broncos happy ![]() A perfectly executed win by Seattle without a huge statistical game from the 'Hawks... Yep...we got this one!!
