Will be for sale shortly after I receive it and get a better idea of exactly what I have.

Because they did not know.

And it's not my job to tell them.

In the same auction they had an item from the Mickey Mantle estate that they listed as a bat that was signed by "11 Hall of Famers". You would think they would mention that it was a 500 home run club bat.

Unfortunately another bidder recognized the same thing I did and outbid me.

I was looking closely at that Lot, and because there was not even a mention of the pages being signed, I just assumed that the names were facsimile signatures. How could they possibly be that lackadaisical and neglectful?

It seems highly unlikely that Mears could overlook something like that that. Wouldn't the Consignor say something when he/she saw the Lot and its description posted on-line? Hard to believe the Consignor would approve of this... unless it was someone who is completely naive, or inherited the book (knowing absolutely nothing about memorabilia or collecting).

This one is a real head-scratcher

The autographs are not incredibly clear. They are pencil on a darker background. The Hornsby that you can see, I assume that it is so clear due to the flash reflecting off of the graphite. The auction house was under the impression that someone had written the names of the photographed players under the photo. They have no doubt that the "markings" are real and not facsimile. They just seemed to have thought that they were just written by someone who was identifying the photos. However, there is no question that these are autographs of the individuals. The two clearest that I have seen from the listing are the Hornsby and the Grimm, and both are 100% the real deal. Add that to the fact that the auction house says that the "markings" are in pencil (not facsimile) and you have your answer.

At least I hope you do!
