Hi-
Below are the two I have. One is an Al Bridwell royalty check for The Glory of Their Times. It is a postwar check but from a prewar player, and related to a classic book. The second one is a bit of a stretch. It is definitely prewar as it dates to 1868. It is signed by Elihu Phinney. He was the son of the owner of the farm where the first game was supposed to have been played according to the Mill's commission. He was also named as one of the players in the first game (I believe this to be Elihu Phinney III, but I could be wrong as I do not know when Elihu Phinney Jr died). The family farm is part of the Hall of Fame grounds. I wish I could find a 19th century pay check for a major leaguer! Alan |

Carl Hubbell pay check from the NY Giants, he was an exec with the team for many years after his retirement.
I have not seen another item with the Carl O. Hubbell signature , though I assume they do exist.

FWIW, checks from "The Meal Ticket's" personal checking account were always Carl O. Hubbell. His name was embossed on his checks this way and that's the way he signed them based on the ones that I've seen through the years. In my personal collection I own one that is signed this way from 1980. Last edited by Scott Garner; 12-01-2013 at 05:27 AM. |

This is not baseball, but still pre-WWII. I received this in the mail from Italy today. Appears to be payment for something to do with automobiles. This is signed by Nedo Nadi (1894-1940). One of the greatest fencers of all time, he won 6 gold medals between the 1912 and 1920 Olympics. At the 1920 games he won 5 gold medals, winning in every event he competed in - individual foil and sabre and team foil, sabre and épée. He also fought for Italy in WWI. This is also quite large 9 3/4 x 4.

According to the Freeman's Journal of Cooperstown, Phinney, Jr. died in 1863. So that check would be Elihu Phinney III. |
