I have to admit that I just kept studying the base when I first looked at it. Correct or not, I came to the conclusion that the base was covered with dirt for one of two reasons: 1) Cobber was asked to do a photo shoot of him sliding (attacking) 3rd base with his signature slide and he had done several takes for the photographer to get exactly the right photo composition. 2) Dirt was piled on the base to hold it in place when Cobb shredded it for the shoot.
