Kevin- It seems like I am saying this more and more lately....but, what I tell folks is that even if what we do doesn't pan out, at least we can hold our head high that we tried. We have to keep trying!! We must Keep shining the light...

I know it has changed my bidding. I don't bid on auctions anymore from certain sellers. It's been tough recently, because they had several cards I'm looking for.

To those who say posting on these boards isn't getting anything done about these problems, my response is just think of all the new people who come to these boards and read about this crap and learn that it is going on. Just because the scammers aren't being arrested, tried, convicted and imprisoned doesn't mean there isn't some good that comes out of these posts.
I can see a person (especially a young person) being interested in pre - war and/or graded cards getting taken by one or two of these scammers and then decide to give this whole hobby up and never come back. How much does THAT hurt the ability for us to sell OUR stuff when the time comes? On the flip side, I can imagine a person wanting to collect pre - war and/or graded cards and they find this forum, read these threads and they get educated on this crap and don't fall for it. They then feel better about themselves and WANT to stay engaged in this hobby. Finally, for those who say they are tired of Peter posting about this stuff and why doesn't HE do something about it. The questions are, 1) why do you continue to read and post a response if you don't like what Peter is writing and 2) why don't YOU do something about it? By some people's responses, it sounds as if Peter is some pee on that is just shouting into the wind while they are a heavy hitter that could get something done IF they wanted to. Well, either get something done to stop or curb these messes OR stop complaining about guys like Peter who are bringing these situations to our attention. For the record, I am not just pissing into the wind for the hell of it. I have spoken about hobby issues with law enforcement, and I have been assured that law enforcement reads the Board and that posting here is one way to bring matters to their attention. Now granted that is no assurance that anything will result from it, but even if it's tilting against windmills, it's better than being a sheep.

If I see a lot which has a bidder/bidders with bid retraction/s I don't bother to bid. It has changed my bidding ways on eBay for sure. The only thing which scares me more are the auctions where we can't see this going on. I hope other auction houses are taking notice & cleaning up their acts if need be.
I applaud those who bring these things to our board & for us to read. Thank you

If this bothers you, then do something. Specifically, make a large bid early. Watch it get shilled to above your maximum and then retracted to just below it. Then do your own retraction with 12 hours left (the latest allowed) and watch the shiller get stuck with it and pay fees on the inflated price. Works best with consignors.

Doesn't mean we can't do our small part in affecting their bottom line.

Things were a lot more work before Ebay.
Depending on exactly when, there were always odd difficulties. And just as much scamming. Of course, the money was a lot less. Steve B |
