I believe MEARS only authenticates game usage...so that would narrow down your authenticators to PSA/DNA, JSA, GAI, or SGC. PSA/DNA and JSA are the big two/most respected in the hobby...so you may want to call them individually and see what they charge. Honestly, I think the cost to authenticate will often times more than what the item(s) are worth (shipping, authentication, etc.) depending on size of the item/amount of signatures. Your friend might be better off either posting photos to this site and asking some more experienced collectors, or taking it to a local show where perhaps an auction house in attendance could give you a better idea on appraisal/value.
