I would definitely resubmit the Mantle if you ever want to sell it. It won't come back worse, and for $15 I'm pretty sure you'd get at least one better grade!

Yeah I am going to probably resubmit it. How hard are SGC's to crack? I know Beckett is a screwdriver and hammer technique (thanks to the guys on the forum) works really smooth. I'm not really looking to sell the Mantle now but if I do decide to down the road it would probably sell much higher ungraded at this point.
And Sean I would say a 2 or generous 2.5. This is what I mean look at yours and look at that Mantle. I've looked at it under a loop. The person I bought it from is on the forum as well and I trust him and he got it from big auction house and they had it as EX. Maybe the graders wife left him that day for a Mantle look alike??? HA! Just take your time, and you can crack that Mantle out. Try using a smaller size screwdriver. Nice cards everyone.

I have gotten some disappointing grades on a couple of monster cards. I think the graders are more scrutinizing with big name players. I also think it depends on what kind of day the grader is having.
I have heard it said on this forum many times, "buy the card, not the holder." In the end, it is what it is, an opinion. |

why get it graded then if you dont like the grade? doesnt make sense. its the same card, unless people are just 'fishing' for grades. something says if it came back too high you wouldn't be upset with it. this grading doesnt make sense.

Same as getting a 2nd opinion from a doctor. Why should a card be penalized because it is in the wrong holder? People focus on the flip and not on the card. If you sell a card that is in a holder lower than it deserves to be in, then you lose money, as bidders will focus on the low grade and pay the low grade price. You would be better off cracking the card out and selling it raw!
![]() Case in point....no way would I be happy selling this card as a '4', as it looks like a '6'......it deserves '6' money. |

Just use a box knife and go around the entire case. It will pop open easily and there's almost zero chance of damaging the card as long as you go slow.

I may be in the minority here, but I think the card is accurately graded. You have an issue in the red border on the left, and some spotted staining on the card on the left as well.
I had this card. It came back a PSA 5. One of the most beautiful 5's you will ever find. Comparing my 5 to your 5, that is what makes me think the card is accurately graded.... http://www.classicauctions.net/Defau...d=61&lotid=486 So mine had a very tiny surface wrinkle on the right side. The problem they claimed on the reverse just wasn't there. I didn't see it - PSA didn't see it. So my card had a tiny surface wrinkle - yours has chipping in the red and spotted staining. That is why I think the '5' grade is spot on. Last edited by bobbyw8469; 07-05-2013 at 05:49 AM. Reason: added info |

The Red Heart looks nice for the grade. You have to ask yourself. What would you rather have. An SGC 2.5 or a PSA 6 (OC). Obviously SGC hammered it for the centering, and they don't give qualifiers. I can compare values of both if the owner wants me to.

First of all, nice card. Secondly, SGC has always seemed more consistent than the others and probably got the grade correct. Now, the difference compared to others with that grade is that yours is "high end," meaning it meets the criteria in ways, including flaws, that are not so obvious, whereas with some others in the grade, it's more obvious even in a scan. People who buy 1953 Mantles will be buying the card and not the holder anyway. Keep it as is, nice card, looks good.
All cards pictured in this thread look great and will sell for more than the typical grade on the holder, at least IMO. High resolution scanner is a must when it comes time to sell. P.S. I was referring to all SGC graded cards pictured here and the Kaline. Demmitt was 1.5 - 2 grades to the good. Last edited by Clutch-Hitter; 07-05-2013 at 07:37 AM. Reason: Edited to add P.S. |
