Thanks Jeff. I read somewhere that the source of that information was a General Mills executive. There are some strange things about the set though, I'll give you that. Looking through the population report, I get the impression someone had a stack of these somewhere that just surfaced fairly recently. 35 have been graded and 30 of those are roughly in the same condition.
Mine definitely looks like it has had 60+ years of wear though.

Picked up a nice Gino for my 57s....
 Down to 5 left - Koufax, B. Robinson (RC), Brooklyn Team, Jim Bunning (RC), Mantle/Berra. Can't wait to finish, got some tough ones! Love the 48 Bowman Red...great card!
