Pronunciation of Sweet Caporal

I've always pronounced it CAP-or-al.

As justification, I go back to the opening scene of Pride of the Yankees, where the young Lou Gehrig tries to get into the baseball game by trading a bunch of "Sweet CAP-or-al" cards to the other kids.

It's possible that the French term "caporal" originally derived from "corporeal" which means "bodily" as in, the French generals smoked full-bodied tobacco.

As for Nap Lajoie, his surname is derived of two words, "La" and "Joie" - in English, "The Joy". Joie in french is pronounced "shwah" (it is had to write since we don't use that sound in English, but you could listen to it off of GoogleTranslate on your Android.

Go back to Post #1 and read carefully. No one has addressed the pronunciation of Sweet.

The first "e" is long and the second "e" is long. For emphasis additional long "e"s may be added.

It should not be confused with sweat, which is salty.
