I won this in Legendary's auction late last month but it finally arrived today. This is a postcard written and signed by Walter Johnson in 1908, just a few months into his second major league season. He wrote this card to his friend while aboard a boat crossing from Cleveland into Detroit for a game against the Tigers. Walter mentions Washington's win over Cleveland that day. This is one of the earliest known examples of Walter Johnson's signature. Signed Walter J.

I was happy to win it. You got a great E107 though. I'm still looking for one of those.

I matched mine against the one Hunts sold that was only initialed. Mine was sent earlier. I heard of a third one floating around and I'd love to see the date on it.

Packs,
Congrats on your early WaJo postcard!
I wasn't in a position to bid on this one because of some recent purchases, but I was defintely following it.

I think this is truly one of the nicest Johnson signed pieces I have seen.

Default Recent Vandy Type I pickups

My computer has been out of commission recently, but I have been fortunate to pick up some extremely nice new Vander Meer Type I photos in the interum.

Many thanks to net54's own Graig Kreindler and Rhys Yeakley for providing assists.

These photos feature:

1) Vandy signs for fans on 6-23-38 at the Polo Grounds not long after he pitched his double no-hit games.

2) Vander Meer pitching at Crosley Field in his rookie season 1938

3) Two photos of Vandy pitching at historic Wrigley Field in September 1939.

4) Vandy being greeted by female fans upon return to Cincinnati in late June 1938. Vander Meer would go on to start the 1938 All-Star game at Cincinnati less than 2 weeks later, picking up the win for the NL. Vandy only gave up 1 hit in 3 IP at the mid-summer classic in '38, shutting down HOF'ers Jimmie Foxx, Joe DiMaggio, Charlie Gehringer and a host of others.

5) Major leaguers Johnny Vander Meer and Al Lyons greet Rollie Helmsley upon arrival at Sampson (NY) Naval Base in 1944.
The heavily vaunted "Sampson 9" had just won the first 25 of 26 games that they had played in prior to Helmsley joining the team- some team!
