Unless it was a good trim job? I am not saying it is but that ran through my mind.... and the 7 has a few mighty big borders....

I suppose it's possible, Leon...there's also some weird white blotch on the 7 not present on the 8...one never knows...esp in certain holders?!

I saw the blotch and took that into account too. It was just a thought I had...I am not saying anything definitive....

Here's a bit more on the orange E94s (although I don't know what to make of the two orange Cobbs', I am still mulling that over) : originally the orange E94s came out of a collection from Brian Daniels. Several years ago Brian swore to me that he had "orange" E94s and I kept writing him and telling him that was impossible. that the E94s only existed in dark green, olive green, red, gold, blue and violet. I told him he must have them confused with the E98 series cards which are blue, red, green and orange. Finally he sent me a scan of an orange Devore and I was floored. I purchased that card from him through a 3rd party and he subsequently sent me a scan showing an E98 orange Cobb, Speaker, and a few others. He had over half of the set in orange. All the cards had been graded by PSA. If I am not mistaken, the PSA 7 Cobb pictured by Pete is the same Cobb. The other one (the 8 confuses me).
Now here is where things get tricky: Daniels didn't have all the players in orange backgrounds. He did not have the Crawford and Devlin for example. The Crawford card (pictured above) is owned by leon and is in an SGC holder. The Devlin I own, and which was a generous gift to me from Alan Sasoon, is also in an SGC holder. Both came from the Lionel Carter collection. This means that they did not come from Daniels. Apparently the one orange sheet which was printed, either accidentally or as a test baloon to see how the color orange looked, could still be the only orange ever printed. This would explain why there is only one orange background card of each E94 player in existence.
I can't explain the Cobb unless it was double printed on the sheet. It could be the same card, cleaned up and resubmiited, but more likely it was a double print on the sheet due to the popularity of Cobb. This would beg the question where are the rest of the oranges which were double printed? I guess we will never know.
P.S. All the oranges Daniels had were, to the best of my fading memory, all PSA 5s or better....

Thanks for the nice write up, Bob, concerning the orange E94s. I think it's been discussed a few times but it never hurts to have a refresher. And I don't think I remember Brian having all of the oranges he did, but I am sure he did. He has had a lot of good cards.

Here is another E94-type....M131.... The crease doesn't bother me too much and it's not like I would find another at a good price... I picked this one up back in the day and only paid a few hundred for it, I think.

If all the oranges were that nice it makes me wonder if they were ever "released". That said, given that Cobbs do not generally exist in greater numbers in any other color, I doubt he was double print on an orange sheet. My guess would be just that very few sheets were made and perhaps one person kept a group while somehow only Cobb survived from another sheet. This is only conjecture.

Thanks for chiming in everyone on the oranges, as I've known about the 2 Cobb's for a while, but couldn't make heads or tails of them with the thought of there only being one sheet produced. Leon, yours is a beauty! I agree Jim, it seems like the ones known are in super sharp condition and probably weren't released. Although possible Bob, it would seem 2 Cobb's on one sheet would be quite odd. Just as odd is Brian had a bunch, but not all the players. I think you're right that it was a test balloon or on accident. My guess is there were a couple of sheets produced and the ones not known are tucked away in a collection we'll see down the road. The 2 Cobb's made it out to the market first being the most valuable card in the set. I'm looking forward to seeing a few more oranges show up down the road!

The two SGC slabbed cards which came from Lionel Carter (Leon's and mine) are nice but 20 and a 30. They definitely look to have been released. The rest of mine are PSA 6s and 7s and as I recall the Cobb and McGraw were also 7s, not sure what the Speaker was. You may have something when you suggest that perhaps this group which Daniels once had were never released as they are so nice, very unusual for E94s. I think Scott Elkins might know a little bit about these cards as I remember my Devore came from him (he bought it from Daniels) and he had at least one orange (maybe more) himself than he bought from Daniels. I don't know if Scott still reads these boards or not...
