Thanks for the info, anything helps. I've had this scan for awhile, but can't find my source for it. I am aware of the team pic(recently sold here), but wasn't aware of the B-L auction. Bill.

Bill:
The card pictured shows Fred Clarke and his brother when they player for Louisville in 1898. I don't understand what your question is? I don't think all of the 1898 Louisville players were produced as part of a set if that's what you mean. The dimensions are a typical cabinet card, I don't have the exact measurments handy but should be easy to come up with. |

I think I see what you are talking about now, you took the 1898 Louisville Cabinet reference from MY post regarding the earliest baseball collectibles for Hall of Famers master list. When I took a look at your website, I also noticed your group of rookie cards duplicated the ones that I put together for Lyman Hardemann and his OldCardboard website page, although you expanded further than the five that we limited our info to.

The top photo shows a standard studio cabinet card which would measure about 6 1/2" x 4 1/4." (the standard size for a cabinet card). There's no indication it's anything other than a normal studio portrait, meaning it may very well have not been sold commercially like a trading card, though it is interesting that they are in uniform. Just from the posted scan, it looks legitimate and period.
The cabinet card was a standard style or format of photograph back then, sometimes was used like a premium or trading card (N173 Old Judges, Sporting News) but most were jut normal photographs, including of family portraits. If I had to guess, I would strongly guess this cabinet card falls into the non-commercially issued category. Though I can tell you that 19th century studio cabinets like this of Hall of Famers in minor league uniform are very rare. Last edited by drc; 03-03-2013 at 01:03 PM. |

First off, thanks for your past help Phil, your knowledge of HOF rookies is far superior to mine. As a Red Sox HOF collector I have read many of your posts. Also, I have used your list and the oldcardboard site among auction houses and many other sources, and all have been an immense help. I am strictly a Red Sox collector, but decided to try to gather scans of all Hall of Fame first year cards. I am also expanding to everything prior to first year cards and I'm using my website as a gathering point. It's just easier to have a site to organize everything.
Eventually I hope to reach out for more scans as this is a great forum for info, but for now I will just occasionally ask for help on cards that have been giving me a particularly tough time. Again, everyone thanks for the help. This was just one of those cards I've had trouble getting info on. As an aside, my website is free for anyone to use. I just use it as an organizational tool, hopefully it will help others.

Bill - let me know if you need help finding anything --- I have many scans if rookies as well (although my current "site" only shows single-player images nothing with multi-players). I do have scans of most multi-player "rookies" on my computer.
