In hindsight, I guess I was foolish for thinking I could get the postcard at that price. The postcard being raw prevented me from going higher, but I just got crushed by three other snipes. Final bid: $823.55.

I was the underbidder on this card. Had a high snipe of $813, and thought it would never come close to that. Apparently someone wanted it worse than I.

Gracias, Chris and John. Can't wait to see the Speaker in person. It should be easy to see past the wrinkles on a 100-yr old card. All the best to y'all.

I was very happy to add two more 1911 Zeenuts (tough pose variation and a tough single), great auction Al!

I did my research on the postcard, and could only find three others that have been sold in the past through the various auction houses. There was an "authentic" one that went for $450 before the BP, an "excellent" one that went for $900 before the BP and a raw one that was beat and sold as part of a lot with a Thorpe photo that went for $3xx, IIRC.

I knew what the postcard was when I saw it, just from being a Thorpe fan. I was shocked to see it show up on eBay. In hindsight, my snipe was woefully insufficient. But i was kinda nervous about it being raw. I coudn't find anything about the postcard ever being reprinted, but I am cetainly not as knowledgeable as many of the other posters on here. I am a mostly a low-end collector, and I was gunshy about getting in too deep.

The postcard did start at $199, but I wonder if the seller (a postcard dealer) really knew what he had. Seems hard to believe such a nice example would sell raw if the seller knew the rarity of what he had.

Baker price did not surprise me, earliest card and extreme rarity, heck... kinda seems like a bargain for what it is.
