Holy cow, John - those are some serious upgrades. From the T206 Black Swamp find?

Mine is 437.

I just looked at my list a couple days ago and was shocked that I have fewer than 100 cards to go

Default Any of you want to trade/upgrade/downgrade?

JimB - your back set is unreal - I know it's been a few months since you posted it, but still catches your breath when you see it again.

Any of you with set complete or building have dupes and/or want to trade, upgrade or even downgrade..? My set complete (minus big 4) is all slabbed and graded 4-6 (50-80) with the exception of very few I still have in a 3/40. I would love to upgrade...
  • Rockenfeld
  • Shaughnessy
  • Browne (Washington)
  • Tinker (Hands on Knees)
  • Cobb (Green)
  • and a few commons like Lumley, Jesse Tannehill

I have all of these in nice 3's, just want to bump/upgrade to 4 if I could. I have several HOFs in 4 or better - dupes willing to trade as well. I have Demmit and O'Hara STL in 3, but not as much of a focus to upgrade those now given cost (cost to upgrade Cobb green alone will be enough for now).

LMK if you have any of these willing to trade/sell in 4 or better?

And so I don't take the thread into another direction - my (2) # is now 35 given winning the REA auction with 25 HOFs PSA4's and 4.5's. (Not 40, I sold a few )

Ed

Default I knew it wouldn't take long...

Once I started seeing all of the great T-206's here on Net54, it was only a matter of time before I added to my Monster Number for the first time in over a year. Today, at a small, local show. I scored..
Admiral Shlei (Portrait) Polar Bear GAI 4.5 (only my second slab)
Clark Griffith (Portrait) Sweet Cap 150 (my very first HOF T206)
Dode Criss Piedmont 350 BVG 2.5 (my THIRD slab)

These three guys bump my Monster Number to 107

Mark me down for 520! Thanks to Andrew H. for the SGC 10 Elberfeld.

Sat at 512 (no variations) for a month - then decided to go for 520 'minus the big 4'. Lucky to find low grade/price O'Hara & Demmitts. Both from Net54 members!

I'm now done! No way I will try Magie etc... Unless those lottery numbers line up... I will continue to upgrade a few and pursue other interests....

Default I've created a Monster..........

Maintaining this thread is not too difficult though.

Kudos to Nelson for reporting his falling MN.

What goes up - must come down.

Jon has now joined the 520 club.

I'm close, but still a long way to go at 511.

Ending @ 512 (no variations) - the Monster laughed at me. I had a leash on him, but the laughing continued. Nightmares were unbearable.
Ending @ 518 would of been ok, but he would've still been looking at me in the corner of my room with the occasional wink. Monsters do wink.
Ending @ 520 - the Monster is in his cage. He still fake coughs the word 'Magie' from time to time. I just don't feed him on those days...

From my point of view, all monsters over 500 look pretty much the same with just slight variations in the length of their tails. I always carry a sharp knife and if my monster laughs, that tail could be shortened in the wink of an eye. My Monster doesn't laugh, wink or cough and I sleep well.

Default The "Monster"

My set is a bit stagnate sitting at 505. Not many tough backs or duplicates.
My goal is 516. I hope to add a couple in Baltimore.

Default My decreasing Monster number.

As of 6/16/2006 = my number was at 500.

As of 7/20/2012 = my number is at 92. Needless to say, I sold a few, many of them to people on this board.

I don't think I'll ever truly go back and try again, as some of what I sold, I'll never be able to reacquire. It sure was fun when I was actively buying.

At my peak, the 24 missing ranged from rare and/or expensive to inexpensive commons that for whatever reason, I never acquired. Only 5 missing were HOFers (2 Lajoie, McGraw, Plank, Wagner). No SLers missing. No back brands missing (except Cobb-brand). Though in low condition, I was happy with my ability to acquire as many different cards as I did.

Beginning Monster collectors -- be patient. It can (mostly) be done, especially if condition isn't a concern. Always buy the HOFers, SLers, rarities, tough backs, tough commons, etc. cheap when they show up. You may not get another chance (I missed out on a really crappy Magie 15 years ago and an extremely crappy Wagner about 25 years ago).

Best of luck to the collectors. Interesting thread.

Mike (18colt)

Your Monster number has been duly recorded. Thanks Mike for both your support and your failure(?). The quest for most of us is the "fiero" (It sure was fun when I was actively buying.) behind this addiction. Rarely does one just go out and buy a completed T206 set, unless you're a Wonka.

More importantly, let me know what you have left......I've been stuck at 511 for awhile..

I had hoped to win Joe Pelaez' graded T206 set on REA, crack a few album pages worth out, and hang them on my wall. Joe was an adamant raw card guy, so it was sadly ironic that REA chose to entomb his best set.

I still plan to display mine raw, just haven't decided how yet.

After three weeks of over-filling my "Didn't Win" folder, I snagged number 108... Rube Manning (Pitching) Sweet Cap. Sometimes they show up in droves, other times it takes forever to snag one.

This is my 1st post on Net54, so I know next to squat about most of this. Not sure if I am doing this in the right place... I bought my first T206 - Bastian - in 1982, stopped at 3. Started again after moving to the Eastern Sierras to exercise my other sickness, building and fishing bamboo. I don't know which is worse, more time consuming, most absorbing.

At least I can't drown...

It appears I will be buying what I like - graded or ugraded, junk or whatever...I'm at 105 and counting. Not sure if my marriage can handle 520!!!

Default I need a ruling from the judges....

Before I won this Waddell (Pitching) - Sovereign, my Monster Number was 108. I am not sure WHAT it is now. 108 and 2/3? I believe it to be real, before I actually see it, based on the vendors word and reputation. Maybe one of you would be so kind as to crack a slab (so we are sure it is real) and mangle a Waddell, in the same fashion so we can do some side by side comparisons.

Hi All,

My number is currently at 49. It's been a pleasure seeing so many of your cards by the way.

Thanks,

The fella that I snagged Rube from recently scored a low-grade slabbed example for his collection. He decided to part with this survivor. Heck I got two-thirds of a HOF T206 for a WHOLE lot less than two-thirds of the expected price.

This thread is for T206 collectors. Your monster number is the number of unique cards you own out of 524 with the following rules:

240 points for Honus Wagner
80 points each for Plank, Doyle NY NATL & Magie
1 point for everyone else.

The highest monster number is therefore 1000.

Condition and back variations are not factors in your basic monster number.
Depending on interest back monster numbers (i.e. Polar Bear Monster numbers) could be considered in the future.

If you have duplicates, they are considered 2nd sets. Each set you own has its own Monster number.

For example I have 569 total cards, including 54 duplicates and 2 triplicates.
I do not own any of the Big Four. Therefore, my monster numbers are 511 for Set 1, 56 for Set 2 and 2 for Set 3.

Let's just get started with your highest Monster Number only. I am also suggesting that you share scans of your most expensive and least expensive card, as I am doing.

No prizes, but I will tabulate and post a listing of the Top Ten, Twenty or Fifty depending on the interest in this thread.

As collectors our sets continue to grow, so at an appropriate interval (to be determined), a Monster Number Update will be considered.

All that's needed in a number with scans if you care to add them.

frankbmd 512
How cool is that.........108.6 Anybody can increase their MN by whole numbers.......

Frank,
You can bump me to 518.

Still need a Dahlen Brooklyn and Ohara Stl if anyone wants to help. I live in the poor-fair-good neighborhood.
