Hal Chase
..........
Hal Chase was indicted as an alleged middleman in the Black Sox scandal. However, he avoided extradition to Chicago, from his home in California. His role in the scandal was never definitively established. Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis never officially expelled Chase from org- anized baseball. TED Z |

Here are a few items....
I kept the white border tobacco cards in the box, since they seem much maligned of late. 5 of the W514s, Sleepy Burns ZeeNut, an assortment of Abe Attell cards, and do any of you recognize those round things at the bottom of the scan? |

Black Sox TRIVIA
Oct 9th 1919, the 8th (and final) game of this World Series was played at Comiskey Park, and we all know what happened.
But, did you know that this day was also the Anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.....strange coincidence. TED Z |

Here are some of my cards regarding the Black Sox. In the early '80s I wrote to a couple of players from the 1919 World Series that were still living, and Ray Fisher provided this answer when asked about Joe Jackson's play during the series.
I also corresponded with Joe Jackson's sister who was very nice and said that he had been a good brother to her and that she did not agree with everything in Donald Gropman's book, "Say it Ain't So, Joe". I sent her the Dover reprint Cracker Jack card of her brother, as she did not have any of his cards. Thsi is the first time I have tried to attach pictures, so I am sorry if they look a little goofy. Hi Andy,
Sorry that the note didn't come out more clearly. It says: Ann Arbor, Dec. 16 / 80 Dear Mr. Alcorn, I do not remember seeing Joe making any bad play in the series. Yours truly, Ray L. Fisher I can send you a larger scan if you would like, just let me know. Jeff |

You don't really need to send a larger scan. Thank you for letting me know.

Judson, you are right. The three poker chips are from the Brook Club, Arnold Rothstein's club. That's a great book, tremendous insight into what happened, much more than from anything else I ever read about 1919. What seems likely to me is that Mr. Rothstein didn't leave anything to chance, he had 2 separate fixes in on the World Series, each independent and unknown to the other. All he needed was for one to work. I think both worked to some extent.
In Mr. Pietrusza's book I think he has a photograph that shows a poker chip or two, just like these. And that's one fine Attell signature. I've never seen one of those. Impressive. Last edited by FrankWakefield; 06-05-2012 at 06:08 PM. |
