Hello all. I have a fairly broad question on trimming the border of Type 1 photos and what it does to the perceived value. Obviously this is an absolute no go in Vintage cards and it destroys the value. But if you find a very nice type 1 photo but the entire border around the photo is cut off does it crush the value? TIA

It doesn’t crush the value and some collectors actually prefer it. I’m not one of them. Personally, I like my photos to look as if they were just pulled from a photo archive. What irks me is when I’m familiar with and might even be after a particular example, only for it to surface months or years later freshly cleaned and trimmed. No thanks.

Like all things with photos, also depends on the subject, quality otherwise, importance.
I had a Jackie photo that was cut down a great deal from a somewhat famous photo . . . still was valuabe in its own right. But, then again, was a fraction of the value of the original 8 by 10. |

It's more accepted than in the card world because so many photos have been trimmed down by the newspaper or magazine when they were used for publishing.
That said, I do think clearly untrimmed and standard sized photos should carry a premium. |

That makes complete sense. Definitely helps me gauge how accepted a trimmed down type 1 photo is vs a vintage card where it is completely frowned upon to alter in anyway. I am 100% with you. Standard sized photos that haven't been touched definitely carry a premium in my book. Thanks for the response.

Ok here is another question for my Type 1 Vintage photo experts. Is there a big depreciation for a nice Type 1 vintage photo if it has a personalized auto on it vs a copy with no auto. For example lets use a player like Jackie Robinson or Roberto Clemente. If they sign a nice type 1 that is the image of one of their cards does the personalized auto crush the value in your opinion? Really curious to hear some thoughts. Thanks

I would argue that it does not (especially in the case of Jackie Robinson or Clemente), simply because the photos are so scarce. The personalization is kind of too bad but the signature is a plus and should only help in terms of value.

I like how this particular signature works with the photo, especially since it is similar to how it appears on the card. But I was originally put off by the signature and almost didn't grab this photo! So glad I did. If it was personalized, it would be less ideal, but it wouldn't stop me for getting it.
