Default for everyone! -- what's your favorite card of all time?

share pics and dialogue. stories, ideas, you name it. very exciting and fun topic for us all to participate in if you so choose!

i'll go first. 1953 satchel paige with wear. the lived aspect is crucial. i just got this piece today. very very happy. its everything about his mythos to me expressed in the portrait distilled in this beautiful painting. and as it was transferred to the industrial printing process of the card, it acquired another level and layer of power which isnt immediately apparent in the painting. to me this is the best card of all time, and my personal absolute favorite. so much of what satchel brought to the game in image-card form.

excited to hear your picks, choices, and stories!! lets chat!

This one.
The only card my Dad and I bought together. He wasn't one to drive to a card store, too busy trying to makes ends meet. On the one occasion we did he bought this card for me. Purchase price was $225 and I know he wasn't in a position to afford silly luxuries like baseball cards at the time.

It meant/means the world to me and I would never sell it.

To me, it's 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig. A lot of gorgeous cards, but right now this is it for me.

My all-time favorite card is the 1998 Donruss Crusade Red Larkin.

But if we are trying to focus on vintage, it's the 1964 Topps Rose or Robinson. I absolutely love the 64 design, even though a lot of people don't like it.

ah a fan of one of the most storied franchises in the game i see! these are all really cool pics. i see you snuck in a venezuelan at the end !

let me throw in the 59 topps frank robinson with you too. the black circle frame is like a fisheye lens almost; the reds logo and print on it make it feel like a cut still from a old school bond movie or something. these are great pics; thanks for sharing these cool cards!! 64 is a great set.

Yep, Redlegs collector here.

I appreciate the kind words. I get a lot of joy from photographing my collection.

I did slip a Venny in there. I've been on a bit of a Venezuelan kick lately and this Robinson just came in the mail and I haven't shared it yet.

An honerable mention for favorite card is this beast:

For me it is a pair. I bought these directly from Score back in the day. It is my 2 favorite players Wade Boggs and Roger Clemens on a wrong back pair. I have owned most of the cool cards and many many insanely rare cards but these have been by far my favorite cards since the day I bought them. I can't say I would never sell them but it would take life changing for me money to do it.

i've been meaning to get into the venezuelans + some retirados! maybe someday soon... the ted card is definitely a beast. love the jersey types from this era. bring back the short sleeves + cutoffs! perfect for that dog day summer.

Yes, those are my current 3 copies. I love the write-up on back as well…so lengthy. The Cobb is quite striking also, such a neat set.

that's one of the things i love about the cracker jacks + play balls myself. the writeups, although less lengthy on the CJs, are really wonderful. the play ball nicknames too. its great stuff. congrats on the awesome pieces!!

Always been my favorite card. Shows Kelly at the absolute peak of his popularity and career, just after he was sold to Boston for $10,000, at the time a colossal sum. The image depicted is the result of a photo shoot. Some years ago REA sold an imperial cabinet of a different image of Kelly from the same shoot, which is also depicted.

If the question is what is your favorite specific card you own, then it's this Speaker that my mom bought for me when I was 12.

If it's what card in general is your favorite (not a certain copy of it), then that's a tougher question and I probably have a dozen different answers, but for today it's Gwynn's 1982 TCMA.

If I were forced to narrow my selection down to a single specific card, it would be one or the other of my Warren Spahn cards:

This may seem odd as my favorite but it is a minor league Joe Jackson posing with his wife.
And the look on both there faces in addition he is wearing his baseball uniform that is so different from what they wear today

My favorite card, too. The pose was also used on the Yum Yum issue.

Different Kelly for me...

I've been looking for a nice example of this card for years and finally won this last summer at REA.

Default Favorite card

Tough question- if I was forced, I'd vote the 53 Bowman Color Pee Wee Reese.

For me, it has to be the 1952 Coca Cola Cards. While they're not cards in the traditional form, they are incredibly unique. Especially when you start seeing each card for each player. The way Coca Cola decided on how to design these cards sheds so much importance about the style of the player and what makes them special. When you see them, you can't take your eyes off of them.

I love all Wagner portraits-such an iconic pre-war baseball card.

But especially the 1906 Fan Craze. It’s original facing orientation, much earlier issue than other portrait versions, incredibly scarce, and large scale like a 52 Topps-making for a mesmerizing pre and post-war pairing.

That question is so tough I'm going to limit myself to Baseball cards. And even at that I'm going to cheat by posting an uncut sheet of my 1962 Canadian Post Cereal cards featuring both Ernie Banks and Orlando Cepeda:

Neck-and-neck would be my sheet featuring both Rocky Colavito, Frank Robinson and Juan Marichal:

I’m a Yankee fan, but if I was given one choice of a baseball card to describe to someone what a baseball card should look like it would have to be this one

Yes, I know I picked a 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig above, but that 1953 Bowman color of shortstop Pee Wee Reese flying in the air is right there next to Lou. What a great looking baseball card!

My favorite is the T206 Christy Mathewson shown below, as it was in the first batch of 5 Prewar cards I ever picked up, and the pose and overall look mesmerized me into continuing collecting pre-WW2 cards.

Aesthetically Christy tops my charts as well with his "Creation of a Pitching God" pose seen in multiple 'E' candy card sets.

So I guess at heart I (Ad)am a Matty man since Creation of this hobbyist.

Suffering from a Gaffe Infection (having a sick obsession with errors & variations), I adore this big-time duo...

i'll go first. 1953 satchel paige with wear. the lived aspect is crucial. i just got this piece today. very very happy. its everything about his mythos to me expressed in the portrait distilled in this beautiful painting. and as it was transferred to the industrial printing process of the card, it acquired another level and layer of power which isnt immediately apparent in the painting. to me this is the best card of all time, and my personal absolute favorite. so much of what satchel brought to the game in image-card form.

excited to hear your picks, choices, and stories!! lets chat!
I gotta go with this as well -- it was my first real vintage purchase after I got back into the hobby after 30 years. It's beautiful art that illustrates that no, he wasn't a young man anymore, but here he was at 46 still striking people out. That he returned at 59 and tossed three shutout innings ... just beyond belief.

I have a great longtime hobby friend with the same exact favorite card for the same reason. Nice card.

It's a bad old pic but I made him a superfractor of it many years ago.
