This is the reason I love to collect companion pieces...
After spending some time sifting through a thousand or so auctions on ebay, I came across this...
1936dimaggioDEBUT.jpg and I bought this last year, a stub from DiMaggio's Major League Debut... dimaggiodebut2.jpgdimaggiodebut3.jpg this is the first photo of any TYPE from his debut that I've ever seen. Since he started off the year on the DL for a few weeks, no one knew when he was going to start playing, which is why anything from this game is extremely scarce. Obviously, I'm happy as a pig in SH*T over this one. Regards, Jimmy Last edited by thekingofclout; 01-25-2010 at 05:20 AM. |

January Pickups
No where near prewar, but I picked up a large grouping of press passes and pins from the early 70s at an estate auction. The estate owner worked for a sports communications company and attended a ton of sporting events ranging from 1972 to 1976, including world series games, superbowls, NCAA tournaments, college bowl games, NBA all star games, and many golf and tennis tournaments. One of the neater items, is a Arnold Palmer signature on a small piece of letterhead for the 1974 PGA championship. There are also press passes to the 1976 World Series and NLCS, and boxing press passes to a couple of Ali fights, and Frazier Foreman fight.

My Holy Grail of Tickets
After admiring his 1941 Lou Gehrig Memorial game ticket (It's been on my want list for a real long time), Ben (Forever Young) found one for me on EBAY that fit my criteria and wallet. He also gave me great info on how much one in this condition should go for (Info was perfect).
I'd say this one is in GD to VG condition with no tears and a little staining. It should present well with a nice Gehrig signature. Thanks again Ben for finding this for me!

Gehrig farewell- Mike's Holy Grail of tickets
Mike,
Nice pickup and this has always been one of my favorites as well! FYI- Alot of people don't know this, but this game was never played on July 4th, 1941. I think that perhaps weather prevented it from happening on the day it was originally scheduled. The game and speech actually occured the next day on July 5th. The Yankees beat the Philadelphia A's 10-5 behind lots of Bronx Bomber offense, great pitching by Red Ruffing and let's face it, a ton of inspiration from The Iron Horse. |

Lou's Day
July 4th 1941 was a double header played between the Senators and Yanks. The ceremonies for Gehrig were held between games.
Dutch Leonard beat the Yanks 3-2 in the opener. Pete Sundra was the winner for the Yanks in the night cap 11-1. http://www.baseball-reference.com/te...e-scores.shtml Mike, We are both lucky. I was going to bid on that until I found something else I wanted more. I would've cost one of us more money. Great ticket. Looks a lot better than the scan the guy had in the auction. Mark

Lou's Day
Mark,
Hmm... FYI- I primarily use a different source of reference for game logs. I use Retrosheet.org. I go to games tab, and then teams (in this case Yankees), and then individual game logs. Retrosheet shows no game played on 7/4/41. On 7/5/41 the Yankees played the A's (one game only, no double header). I wonder why the difference between the two sources? It's my understanding that Retrosheet uses actual official scorekeeper info for many games. |

Mark, I'm sure glad you didn't bid on that!
By the way, I think you were thinking of July 4th, 1939. That was the doubleheader against the Senators where Gehrig gave his speech. The 1941 date (this ticket) is the Memorial game about 1 month after he died. I would still love to have a 7/4/39 ticket to go along with this one.

Nice
Mike,
Great addition and the price was not bad at all. I like the "Yankee" green color variation vs. my example(red). I am glad that you were able to win it and Mark found something else. I am always happy to help a fellow collector fill a void. Ben

Interesting
Scott,
Mike is correct. I made a goof in that I checked July 4 1939. I thought that ticket was from the day Lou gave his famous speech, which was July 4th 1939. I guess this is a different game after he died. My bad. Mark

Does anyone know how hard it is to find a 7/4/39 ticket for Gehrig's speech? Also, was there one or two tickets that day since there was a double header?
Thanks, Mike

Mike, This is very tough...been looking for a long time for this ticket...when one comes up..it will be some big bucks; 4 figs and up depeding on condition(2 in psa pop report one being autographed). Which means...I most likely will never get one which makes me want to cry and eat smashed bananas. I hope this helps. Ben

It will be very difficult to find one. In my 45 years of collecting, I have seen three, and managed to snag one. (A new book, "Cooperstown Confidential," by Bruce Markusen, reports that Steve Verkman recently sold one for $22,000. I find that a bit hard to believe.) Here's mine: Last edited by David Atkatz; 01-29-2010 at 05:41 AM. |

Wow...if they're going for that much, I'd say I'll have to pass on it due to the number of things I could add to my collection for that amount of money.
Maybe someday.

No, it's not mine, but I was the underbidder on it in Verkman's auction. It did skyrocket, but more so for the fact it's the only know example actually signed by Gehrig. Given that I collect autographed Yankee stubs along with vintage gloves, I had to make a play for it. Unfortunately, I was up against someone with much deeper pockets.
