Anybody care to dive in deeper with E98 information?

Awesome topic everyone. I've really enjoyed reading everyone's discussion on my favorite set. I got my first E98 from an auction house in Indianapolis called Slater's Americana in 1999. It was a Mack with a green background which grades a 2 from PSA. It is now part of my near set. I have 29 of the 30 with only the Cobb to go. I own many of the cards thanks to Robert Adesso and Brian McQueen from the board. Thanks again guys. (I apologize if I spelled your names wrong!)

My question to everyone on the board is how many Old Put backs are known? Does each card of the 30 have at least 1 known Old Put back? What colors have an Old Put? I would love to know all of the facts!

I own a Honus Wagner red background with an Old Put which I won through Robert Edwards earlier this year.

Leon, I talked to you at this this years' national and I know you mentioned that you owned a few Old Puts. Anyone's input on my questions would be greatly appreciated. Take Care everyone!

Tim- There are some E98s which I have never observed with Old Put stamps on the backs. Off-hand I can tell you that I have never seen a Vaughn or Coombs. Also, I had never heard of any Old Put having a color background other than red until I saw Leon's blue Clarke. I don't know why this is such an aberration but every other one was red.
As I recall SCD gave the Old Puts their own card designation as a "t"(tobacco) card, but it's been a few years ago and I don't know if that designation still exists.

Hi Tim,

Good to hear from you.

I've never seen two of the same player with an Old Put back, so I would assume each red background Old Put is unique.

I have a McGraw thanks to a fellow board member.

Last year I found a super low grade Dooin Old Put with a Blue background which is the second one (Clarke) I've seen. Time will tell, but it's possible there's a blue set out there.

It's also plausible that only a stack of E98 cards were stamped that included mostly red with a few blue mixed in there.

Good luck with finding your Cobb and nice pickup on that Wagner!

Thanks for the information on Old Puts. The fact that each Old Put is thought to be unique is an exciting thought. Getting the Old Put Wagner was almost out of my league, but I wanted to have a unique, and special centerpiece to my collection so I went the distance on paying for it. Happily, I don't regret it.

You guys really have me pumped when it was discussed about the rarity of the Coombs and Vaughn in a red background. I had no idea. Both my Coombs and Vaughn have a red background!

My near set of 29 breaks down as so:
Blue 8
Green 4
Orange 9
Red 8

I have personally seen a good scan of another blue Old Put so I know at least one more exists. I paid dearly for this one in one of Barrys auctions. I don't remember seeing 2 of the same player but it does seem like I see far more HOF'ers with Old Put than commons (though "common" is a misnomer for some commons)....regards

Included in the E98 set GAI/UPS lost for me was a red Clarke Old Put. If you ever see one for sale, be sure and let me know because it could be mine and I'd like to know what ever happened to it. Doug Allen picked it up for me at the National several years ago. I believe that is my Clarke (prior to sending it off to get it slabbed) that still appears in the SCD. Not positive but it seems like it is.
