There is a good possibility they were re-printed with different backs, since J. D. McCarthy made postcards for player and team use "to order". He didn't print a bunch of each player or pose and keep them in stock. W Alison, also a poster on N54 might be able to add more detail. He has a listing of the 11 known back typing's with the approximate era for each type. Note the back typing correlates to the date of printing and not necessarily the date the image was taken.
Kind of an underappreciated postcard set since his images represent some of the earliest - and in a number of cases - the only known images of certain players.
