Interesting...I was looking through my set last night and after reading this tried to see if there was any patterns as to when they would use the different spellings. No rhyme or reason...color didn't matter, neither did size of the players name. Looks really random...good catch, I will now not unsee that...

Dean's cards isn't good for much but they do have this handy page where you can scroll thru the '63 Mets team set and check out the two team name variations
