Approaching 5000 is correct I have seen a lot of claims that he had over 5000 cards in the master set but that's incorrect.
I think a lot of those claims come from when Heritage started auctioning his T206's and their statement that it was over 5000 cards. He had an amazing collection that included 100's of duplicates and over 100 varieties and misprints that were included in that 5000 number that Heritage auctioned. He didn't auction off all of his cards in Heritage but he still didn't have over 5000 cards in the master set.

David Hall himself said he had around 5000 for the master set but he didn't give a specific number so it could have been 4700 or 4800.

I think Brady Hill could be close to Hall's master number.
He has over 3300 in his PSA set registry's and he only has a couple of the Piedmont and Sweet Caporal backs listed in the registry, most of the 3300+ are off backs.
