The best looking Jackie Robinson card you could find for $1,000. Maybe a low to mid grade ‘54 to ‘56 Topps, or a ‘50 Bowman beater.

A thousand lottery tickets, hoping to win enough to be able to buy a decent card at today's prices.

For Pleasure:

A nice T206 Matty White or Dark cap. I think these cards have a lot of room to grow and are relatively inexpensive considering Matty's status in the hobby. A nice T205 would work too.

For Investment:

Buy a Koufax rookie. Good chance you'll be able to double your money in short order.

If you're a modern guy with outside interests I'd pick up a Lebron rookie now before it becomes the next Jordan rookie.

I've been collecting Sherry Magee cards in hope he will have his day of recognition (besides the whole Magie error). You can usually get them for common pricing. Plus he's the only player I've ever heard of that punched and umpire out cold. Only served 36 games.

Well, his dad did name him Sherry, which is even worse than Sue.

Of course his given name was Sherwood. I often wondered why he didn't just go by "Woody". Then again....

A $1,000.00, at least card wise, just doesn't buy what it used to just 2 years ago. I remember seeing Hank Aaron and Willie Mays' rookie cards (1s obviously) in this neighborhood just two years ago.

Difficult to get anything good for that price right now.

You want high quality card of a high quality HOFer?

Across all the sports I see one that is still an absolute bargain:

1980 Topps Larry Bird PSA 9, the one without Magic on the other side.

9's are going for just over $1,000 right now.

The 9's with both of them on there are over $50,000+. A PSA 9 Magic Johnson alone is $4,000+.

It doesn't add up. Grab the Bird. Elite HOFer in PSA 9 for that price right now?

I mean no offense, and everyone's entitled to their opinion of course, but can you do me a favor and stop the first 500,000 people walking into a baseball stadium this year and ask them if they've ever heard of Sherry Magee? I'm guessing you'd have a hard time finding 5 people who have. And those 5 are likely board members.

That is true but I think it's also true of a guy like Pete Browning or Dummy Hoy and they're both hobby staples.

That's why I collect them. Borderline HOF player with an interesting story. Often found for $20. Good long term investments for the price, especially if he gets voted in.
That being said, I also got a extensive Bill Donovan and Joe Wood collection, hoping for the same thing.
Worse case you get a 100+ year old card that steadily increases in value.

Agreed and would go with the 54-56 Topps route

You could buy a 82 Topps traded Ripken psa 9 and possibly could have a few bucks left to spare. The card is not iconic but the player and his status in the game is eternal.
