I just bought this 4 card lot for $15 and I think that at least one of them is an Exhibit from 1939 Ted Williams. I think I got a good deal even if the condition isn't the best.
am I right about the Ted card? and what years are the other 3 cards from? ![]()

there are two main types of exhibits that would have a Ted Williams. They are very easy to tell apart and the name of the set in the hobby explains it succinctly. From 1939 to 1946 they were "Exhibits Salutations" simply meaning there was some kind of message in addition to the "signature" From 1946 -1961 they had not message and were just "Exhibits."
So of the ones you have pictured above the Williams is definitely from 1939 - 1946. There are two variations on this card, one where his back is to the camera called "number showing" and the one you have above "number not showing." Yours is by far the more common version. Generally speaking the cards are worth only a tiny fraction of what a regular issue card from that era would be worth, but at $15 for the lot you did fine.

No, the "salutations" were only produced up to 1946. There are Williams cards from the second "regular" set produced until 1961.

A number of salutations were included in with the 1947-66 Exhibits and that Williams was one of them. The other #9 showing Williams was a Salutation 1939-46 only.
You got a nice deal on them. Here is a Feller that was issued after 1946- ![]() Last edited by smtjoy; 07-08-2016 at 08:08 AM. |

Thanx for the replies guys!
Is there any way to determine the year? Is it worth having these things graded ? I was just happy to nab cards of players I might otherwise not be able to afford, so am not planning on flipping em for a profit or anything.

They make top loaders for these and 4 pocket sheets as well. Oh, and the Case was put out ONLY in 1947 (if memory serves). Last edited by tschock; 07-08-2016 at 08:05 PM. Reason: update for Case |

The Salutation Ted Williams pictured above, was produced into the 1960's which is why the card is so prevalent. There have been pics, I believe on this board, showing an uncut sheet of later exhibits picturing the Williams and one or two other salutation Exhibits. Be careful just going by what the big book says.

That is correct. I posted that uncut sheet. It has a Williams salutation and a Detroit Colavito on it. Cleveland traded Colavito for Harvey Kueen in 1960.

A poster on another forum said PSA was no longer grading Exhibit cards, not sure where they got that from though.

They were probably referring to football. They don't (at least the last I heard) grade the 1948-52 football exhibits.

Sorry Dan the reference is wrong, the card is from 1955 with the printed post card back (Fred can chime in as hes the expert on the 1955 issue that hes working on a master set). And yes PSA grades most of the baseball exhibits but none of the football and not sure if any boxing.

I've been trying to get them to grade boxing exhibits for a while. I cannot figure out why they would cede the entire field to SGC and BVG.

Sorry to be so late to the party! Scott Mt. Joy is correct that the Feller Salutation card with PC back he posted is from 1955 even though it has MADE IN U.S.A. designation in the bottom right corner. ESCO issued this "bastardized" set in 1955 with the Postcard backs using many different previously issued cards from different "sets". Beside the Feller the ever present Pafko Salutation is included in the set as well. There are cards from the "type script" set that has PRINTED IN U.S.A., others with Made in U.S.A, MADE IN U.S.A., and "AN EXHIBIT CARD" set. Though confusing, this is how the set was issued. If anyone has any of the postcard backs in the Exhibit baseball or football sets please PM me. I am doing research and would like to ask some questions. I have some dupes available for trade for others I am looking for or will buy those I need. Best, Fred |
