Cool but odd piece. It seems strange that these activities of Babe and Lou (if that's him) in street clothes would be all that newsworthy, unless they were off on some barnstorming tour. As for the war theme--I do not recall any major conflicts being fought during the time Babe and Lou were in the league together.
Maybe this was generated around Armistice Day and is looking back or memorializing events from WW1--perhaps the 10 year anniversary. Just a guess.

FYI, I found that memorial in the 4th picture:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Division_Memorial It was dedicated on July 18, 1936.
