It's been used for decades in the T206 world, because of the major value differences for some front/back combinations. But basically, there are layers of glue holding together the different layers of most cards. Sometimes they come apart while soaking (Ramleys) or get torn off being ripped out of scrapbooks. Then it's locating the front or back you want to attach to it. You can see on the one shown here that there are two creasese running top to bottom on the back of the card, but not visible on the front of the card. Those were another way I detected the skinning/rebacking. Someone peeled off the back of an error #48, causing the creases. Then they took off the front of card 204, and glued them together.

Oh, what a difference a year makes.
